About

Gundam Musou Special for PlayStation 2 is the Japan-only expanded edition of the tactical action game released on February 28, 2008. Developed by Koei’s Omega Force team and published by Bandai Namco Games, it brings the crossover of Mobile Suit Gundam and the Musou formula to Sony’s older console. It is not Gundam Musou 2 or a separate sequel: Special reworks the first Gundam Musou, which had debuted for PlayStation 3 in Japan in 2007, while adding PS2-specific content. The game is best known internationally as part of the Dynasty Warriors: Gundam line, although this Japanese PS2 version retained its Gundam Musou Special title.

Its battles turn famous mobile suits into one-unit armies. A pilot takes a suit onto broad battlefields packed with opposing machines, uses close-range strikes and ranged weaponry, and works through mission objectives while clearing the way with the rapid, crowd-focused action associated with Koei’s Musou games. A dash action gives the mechanical combat extra mobility, while both the selected mobile suit and its pilot can develop over continued play. That progression gives missions a longer-term reward beyond a single clear and lets players build strength as they unlock and revisit content.

Official Mode is the route for recreating major events and dramatic set pieces from the Universal Century shows Mobile Suit Gundam, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, and Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ. Rather than presenting every episode as a literal adaptation, it organizes key moments into playable stages and places their pilots and machines at the center of the action. Original Mode takes a different approach, assembling characters from across the included anime into a game-created storyline. Alongside the Universal Century material, its roster draws from Mobile Fighter G Gundam, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, and Turn A Gundam, making it a crossover setting rather than a single-series retelling.

Special preserves both of those main modes from the earlier release but expands the Original Mode with a Musha Gundam scenario that was not in the PS3 version. It also adds Musha Gundam Mk-II, an original mobile suit designed by Hajime Katoki. Those additions are the reason the PS2 release is more than a straightforward conversion: it packages the original campaign structure with further scenarios and mobile-suit content for this edition. The game’s “Special” label therefore identifies an enhanced port of the first title, released before the numbered Gundam Musou sequels continued the series on later systems.

The PS2 version also includes local two-player Versus Mode, without online play. Its Normal Match is a direct one-on-one battle, while Musou Match has players defeat enemy mobile suits and collect items to strengthen their machines before fighting each other. Shotdown Match instead makes the contest a race to destroy successively appearing mobile suits. Together with the story-focused Official and Original modes, those rules give Gundam Musou Special room for both solo progression and same-screen competition. For players interested in a PS2-era Gundam action game, it stands as the expanded Japanese console version of the original Omega Force collaboration rather than an adaptation of a later entry.
