About
Forbidden Siren 2 PS2 is a survival-horror stealth game from Sony Computer Entertainment and Project Siren, released in Japan in February 2006 before arriving in PAL territories later that year. Known simply as Siren 2 in Japan, it follows 2003's Siren/Forbidden Siren but tells a separate island-set story rather than revisiting the first game's Hanuda village. The PlayStation 2 game was not issued in North America, making its regional identity an important part of its history. Its multi-character structure, Japanese horror imagery, and threatening soundscape put the focus on navigating danger and uncovering a disaster whose cause is hidden in both place and time.
The action begins around Yamijima, an isolated island off Japan's coast. Twenty-nine years before the main events, a blackout coincided with the unexplained disappearance of the island's population. In 2005, a red tidal wave wrecks the journey of several outsiders and leaves them scattered across the abandoned island; other survivors arrive through their own accidents and circumstances. Players experience the mystery through a changing cast that includes journalist Mamoru Itsuki, Ikuko Kifune, Shu Mikami, Akiko Kiyota, Sōji Abe, military personnel, and others. Their scenarios are not initially presented as one straight line, so piecing together each person's route is central to understanding Yamijima.
Forbidden Siren 2 divides this ensemble tale into mission-based scenarios tracked through its Link Navigator. Each chapter gives its current protagonist a specific objective, such as reaching an exit, finding an object, or dealing with a threat, and progress in one part of the chart can open a secondary condition elsewhere. Survival depends as much on observation and route planning as fighting. Characters can hide, crouch-walk, use items and weapons when available, and take advantage of a revised combat system, but they are often safer avoiding attention. The sequel also provides selectable difficulty settings, a clearer objective-hint system, and a proximity warning that uses controller vibration to signal nearby enemies.
Its signature mechanic is sightjacking: stopping to tune into the visual and audio perspective of nearby people and creatures. This turns hostile patrols into a limited intelligence network, letting the player locate an enemy, watch its movement, or identify useful parts of the environment before choosing a route. The PS2 sequel streamlines the feature with an automatic connection to the closest target while retaining its vulnerability: a character cannot freely move while concentrating on another viewpoint. Some protagonists bring their own variations to the system, reinforcing the idea that the game's many scenarios are different perspectives on the same crisis. The result is a tense balance between gathering information and exposing oneself to danger.
Yamijima's returned residents, the corpse-like shibito, carry forward a defining threat from the first game, while the sequel introduces the more aggressive yamibito. Light matters greatly against the latter and their associated spirits, so lamps, flashlights, and illuminated rooms can become practical tools rather than mere scenery. Archives hidden across the scenarios add documents and other materials that broaden the island's history, rewarding careful exploration alongside the main objectives. Project Siren also shifted the setting toward abandoned concrete structures, coastal facilities, mines, and other locations that give this sequel its own visual character. It should not be confused with Siren: Blood Curse, the later PlayStation 3 reimagining of the original Siren; Forbidden Siren 2 is the direct PS2 follow-up, built around Yamijima and its own cast and calamity.
