About

FIFA 06 PS2 is EA Sports’ 2005 football simulation for PlayStation 2, developed by EA Canada and released as FIFA Soccer 06 in North America. The thirteenth main FIFA game builds its season around the 2005–06 campaign, combining licensed club and international football with a broad choice of leagues, tournaments and teams. Its presentation differs by territory—Ronaldinho and Wayne Rooney fronted several European editions, while the North American cover used Ronaldinho alongside Freddy Adu and Omar Bravo—but the PlayStation 2 game is the same feature-rich console release.

A match puts the player in direct control of a full side, moving with the left stick and selecting passes, through balls, crosses and shots with the face buttons. FIFA 06 reworked the flow of play around more context-sensitive movement, ball handling and set pieces. Passing can be used to build possession or release a runner, while timing a tackle, changing player and reading the next ball are central when defending. The game also implements the advantage rule, so a foul need not immediately interrupt an attack, and its redesigned dead-ball options permit greater variation, including short corners and less predictable free kicks.

One of the edition’s defining ideas is team chemistry. Alongside familiar attack and defence ratings, squads have a chemistry assessment intended to represent how well their players function together. Chemistry and match morale can influence a side’s effectiveness, making the choice of team matter beyond the individual ratings of its stars. Goals, injuries and possession can affect morale during matches, while the longer management game ties that concept to the condition of the squad. The result is a FIFA entry that connects on-pitch results with the wider health of a club rather than treating every lineup as a collection of isolated player attributes.

Career Mode turns that connection into a 15-season managerial campaign. After choosing a club, the manager works through league and cup fixtures while handling transfers, contracts, tactics and finances. Sponsors set objectives such as a league finish or cup success and provide payments and bonuses when expectations are met. The mode also asks the player to balance morale, chemistry and job security with the club’s budget; staff improvements can strengthen areas of the operation, and matches may be played, simulated or watched. It is a substantial alternative to a quick exhibition, framing success as the ability to keep a team competitive over multiple seasons.

For local multiplayer, the PlayStation 2 version introduces FIFA 06 Lounge, a session-based competition designed for groups of up to eight players with a compatible multitap setup. It records results and individual statistics across a series of matches, then uses the ongoing standings and predictions to shape rewards. Lounge formats include winner-stays-on, rematches, catch-up games and best-versus-worst team matchups. Wins earn points for unlocks and special handicaps that can alter later contests, giving a regular sofa tournament a continuing leaderboard instead of making every match a separate one-off.

The PS2 edition also layers challenges, a Fan Shop and unlockable material around its standard football modes. Completing regional challenges across difficulty levels earns points for items such as alternate kits, stadiums, camera choices and video extras. Create-a-player and squad-editing tools let players adjust teams and kick takers, while the game’s licensed setting covers 26 leagues from 19 countries, international sides, 29 stadiums and more than 10,000 players drawn from the period’s data. English-language commentary is provided by Clive Tyldesley and Andy Gray. As a distinctly PlayStation 2 bonus, FIFA 06 includes a playable emulation of FIFA International Soccer, the series’ original 16-bit game, placing a small piece of FIFA history alongside its contemporary season.
