About

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for PlayStation 2 is a third-person action-adventure from Warthog Games and EA Games, released in December 2003. Known in North America as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, this PS2 game is a separate sixth-generation interpretation of Harry's first Hogwarts year, not the earlier PlayStation game with the same name. It was also released for GameCube and Xbox, while the European title retains Philosopher's Stone.

The adventure follows Harry from his discovery of the wizarding world through his first term at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. After travelling from Privet Drive to Diagon Alley and the Hogwarts Express, he meets Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger, attends lessons, and becomes involved in the mystery surrounding the Philosopher's Stone. The campaign adapts the broad events and characters of the first book and film, building toward Harry and his friends' attempt to prevent Lord Voldemort's return.

Play unfolds in a third-person view as players guide Harry through objectives arranged across successive in-game days. Classes, conversations, exploration, combat, and puzzles supply the structure, while Hogwarts and its grounds provide familiar locations to investigate between required tasks. Completing a day's goals advances the story, but players can also use the remaining time to look around or take part in optional activities before ending the day.

Magic is central to the PS2 game's controls. Harry moves with the analog stick, and context-sensitive actions and spells are assigned to the face buttons; a spell can be used immediately or charged by holding its button. Shoulder buttons assist with targeting enemies, and Harry's movement includes automatic jumps at gaps and the ability to catch a ledge when he comes up short. Some sequences ask him to edge along walls, while others put him on a broom, giving the adventure a mix of traversal styles rather than a single type of challenge.

Collecting is woven into the trip through Hogwarts. Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans can be gathered and exchanged for items and wizard cards, and Harry's in-game Remembrall menu keeps track of the things he has found. Hedwig can also help during selected puzzles. These systems reward attention to the spaces around the main route while the central objective chain continues to move Harry from lesson to lesson and toward the hidden Stone.

This PlayStation 2 release arrived after Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and uses a similar action-adventure foundation, which makes its relationship to the earlier console game especially important. Warthog's version was built for PS2, GameCube, and Xbox and tells the first-year story with its own layout and mechanics; it should not be confused with the 2001 PlayStation, PC, Game Boy Color, or Game Boy Advance games bearing the same title. For players exploring the Harry Potter console series, it is the 2003 chapter that revisits the beginning of Harry's journey on sixth-generation hardware.
