About

Call of Duty: World at War: Final Fronts for PlayStation 2 is a World War II first-person shooter developed by Rebellion Developments and published by Activision in November 2008. Although it shares the World at War name and arrives from the same Call of Duty era, Final Fronts is a PS2-exclusive companion game rather than a reduced port of Treyarch's Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, and PC release. It was built around a separate single-player campaign, its own missions and protagonists, and a route through the Pacific and Western European theaters during the closing stages of the war.

The game is organized as 13 missions across three connected campaign strands. In the Pacific, the player follows U.S. Marine Private Joe Miller and his squad through island fighting associated with Guadalcanal, Betio, Saipan, and Okinawa. The European material changes the perspective to Allied troops on the Western Front, including American operations around the Battle of the Bulge and a British airborne advance toward the Rhine. This structure gives the PS2 game a different dramatic path from the main World at War, which is especially important for players looking for the specific Final Fronts campaign rather than the better-known Treyarch version.

Each mission uses the series' squad-based first-person format. The player advances through objectives with computer-controlled Allied soldiers, moving between cover, firing on infantry positions, throwing grenades, and collecting weapons from the battlefield. Loadouts are deliberately compact: a soldier can carry two firearms alongside grenades, so changing equipment means choosing between familiar rifles, automatic weapons, and other arms encountered during an operation. The campaign varies that basic rhythm with infantry pushes, nighttime action, sniper-oriented encounters, infiltration, assaults, and a tank-focused sequence.

Final Fronts tells its war story through several playable soldiers rather than a single uninterrupted lead. Alongside Miller's Marine missions, the European chapters feature Private Lucas Gibson of the U.S. 80th Infantry Division, Gunnery Sergeant Alex McCall in the armored action, and Private Tom Sharpe of the British 6th Airborne Division. Their assignments move from attempts to relieve Bastogne to the fighting connected with Operation Varsity and the capture of Wesel, while the American storyline also reaches Braunau am Inn. The use of British and American viewpoints makes this PS2 campaign distinct from the main game's Pacific-and-Eastern-Front focus.

Rebellion developed Final Fronts specifically for Sony's aging PlayStation 2 hardware, using the studio's Asura engine instead of the technology used for the other console editions. The result is a self-contained Call of Duty release designed around solo play; it does not include the multiplayer modes or Nazi Zombies associated with some other World at War versions. Released late in the PS2's life, it also marked the final Call of Duty game made for the system, making it a notable alternate branch of the 2008 World at War release rather than merely another platform conversion.
