About

Burnout 2: Point of Impact is Criterion Games' 2002 arcade racer for PlayStation 2 and the direct sequel to the original Burnout. Published by Acclaim Entertainment, it trades licensed cars and simulation-minded driving for fictional performance machines, wide-open road courses and a deliberately reckless style of play. The PS2 release arrived first, making it the version that introduced the game's expanded racing, championship and crash-focused ideas before later GameCube and Xbox editions appeared.

The central races are built around maintaining momentum through public roads crowded with civilian traffic. Courses use highways, city streets, mountain routes and airport-adjacent roads rather than isolated racetracks, with junctions, elevation changes and sudden obstacles making every high-speed run hazardous. Players race alone in time-based events or compete against computer-controlled drivers and local opponents, choosing routes and cars as they work through the game's events.

Aggressive driving fuels the all-important Boost meter. Traveling against oncoming traffic, drifting through corners, narrowly avoiding other vehicles and launching over rises reward daring technique, while a full meter lets the player accelerate hard enough to turn a close contest into a breakaway. A collision is costly: the car wrecks, a replacement vehicle is returned to the course, and valuable boost is lost. That risk-and-reward loop gives Burnout 2 its identity, asking players to drive faster precisely where ordinary road sense says to slow down.

Crash mode provides a very different challenge and became one of the defining attractions of the series. Instead of aiming to finish first, the player chooses the moment and angle to cause a spectacular pileup, then tries to send traffic into further collisions and rack up a cash total from the damage. The traffic patterns in each scenario are fixed rather than random, so repeating a junction can reveal better approaches, launch points and chain reactions. It turns the visual chaos into a score-attack puzzle that rewards timing, observation and experimentation.

Single-player progression is organized around championships and unlocks, with new events, vehicles and special cars giving successful races lasting value. Pursuit events reverse the usual race objective by putting the player in a police vehicle tasked with wrecking a fleeing criminal's car. Custom Series options also let players set up races with unlocked machinery. The PS2 edition includes the additional custom cars associated with the later releases, while remaining distinct from the Xbox Developer's Cut, which added extra Crash junctions, online leaderboard functions and other Xbox-specific features.

Criterion's presentation emphasizes speed over realism. Bright, varied environments, moving traffic and dramatic wrecks make the roads feel busy even when a race is simply a sprint between checkpoints, while the responsive arcade handling keeps drifting and boost-chasing accessible. Contemporary reviews praised its intense sense of velocity, crash effects and replayable mode selection, and the game earned favorable critical reception. For PlayStation 2 players looking for a fast early-2000s racing game with no concern for careful driving, Burnout 2: Point of Impact remains a focused blend of competitive road racing, dangerous stunt driving and controlled automotive mayhem.
