About
Ben 10: Protector of Earth for PlayStation 2 is a 2007 action-adventure built around the original Ben 10 animated series. High Voltage Software developed the PS2 edition and D3Publisher released it in North America in October 2007, with further regional releases following that autumn. It puts ten-year-old Ben Tennyson on a cross-country mission after the villain Vilgax steals most of the DNA samples stored in the Omnitrix, leaving Ben with only a small selection of alien transformations at the outset.
The PS2 game is a 3D, stage-based brawler with exploration and simple environmental puzzles between battles. Ben can fight in human form, but the Omnitrix is the central tool: activating it changes him into an alien with a different combat style and movement options. Four Arms is suited to heavy close-range attacks, Heatblast attacks with fire, XLR8 brings speed, Cannonbolt rolls through hazards and opponents, and Wildvine can use its long reach in the world. The changing abilities make choosing the right form part of both combat and navigation.
Each mission sends Ben, Gwen, and Grandpa Max through locations across the United States while Vilgax's forces and other familiar adversaries interfere. The journey begins around the Grand Canyon and continues through areas including Mesa Verde, Area 51, Hoover Dam, San Francisco, Seattle, Mount Rushmore, New Orleans, Washington, D.C., and Cape Canaveral. Enemy encounters are frequently built around waves of drones, creatures, or named villains, while boss battles advance the story and return another alien DNA sample to the Omnitrix.
Combat uses light and heavy attacks, plus alien-specific special moves and unlockable combo techniques. Omnitrix energy limits transformations early in the campaign, so returning to Ben and managing the next change are practical concerns. Collectible Omnitrix points can be spent on further moves, and pickups can offer temporary help such as quicker recharging, extra strength, or invincibility. Later progress grants Master Control, allowing faster switching and removing the usual transformation time pressure.
Protector of Earth also rewards thorough play beyond simply reaching the exit. Main stages conceal Sumo Slammer cards that unlock bonus material, and the game evaluates completed levels with Plumber ranks based on performance. A high grade can reveal character-view extras, while certain major encounters use timed on-screen prompts for finishing attacks. These systems give the PS2 campaign reasons to revisit missions after the first run, even though its main structure remains a direct sequence of cartoon-inspired action levels.
The PlayStation 2 version shares its underlying 3D design with the PlayStation Portable and Wii releases, all made by High Voltage Software. On PS2, a second player can join for cooperative play, making it possible for two people to tackle fights together. This is distinct from the Nintendo DS version, which was developed separately by 1st Playable Productions as a side-scrolling 2.5D game with touchscreen Omnitrix controls. The Wii release adds motion-based attacks and pointer-driven timed events, features not used by the conventional PS2 controller layout.
As an early console game for the franchise, Ben 10: Protector of Earth translates the series' key fantasy into a straightforward action format: one hero can rapidly become several very different heroes. Its story gathers villains such as Vilgax, Kevin Levin, Hex, Doctor Animo, and Ghostfreak around an original threat to the Omnitrix and Earth. For players exploring Ben 10 games on PlayStation 2, it is a self-contained adventure that combines the show's characters and transformations with local cooperative brawling and a lengthy road-trip campaign.
