About
Batman: Vengeance for PlayStation 2 is a 2001 action-adventure game starring DC Comics' Dark Knight. Developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft in association with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, it places Batman in a new Gotham City crisis built in the visual world of The New Batman Adventures. Rather than adapting a single comic or episode, the PS2 game tells an original mystery that begins with a Joker plot and soon draws Batman into a much wider threat to the city.
The campaign is primarily a third-person journey through Gotham locations, mixing exploration, platforming, fighting, stealth, and environmental puzzles. Batman can run, jump, climb ledges, and use his cape to glide across gaps, making rooftops, industrial interiors, and other hazardous areas part of the route through each mission. The game changes to a first-person aiming view for several gadgets, so tools such as batarangs and the grappling hook are not merely decorative: they help Batman reach new paths, interact with targets, and gain an advantage before a confrontation.
Hand-to-hand encounters ask players to combine punches, kicks, blocks, and moves earned as the story progresses. Encounters can also reward a more methodical approach, using equipment to distract foes or deal with a threat at range before closing in. Enemies who have been knocked down must be restrained promptly, adding a small but important distinction to the usual beat-'em-up rhythm. Other portions put the emphasis elsewhere, including wall-hugging stealth sequences, laser-barrier puzzles involving access cards or codes, and situations where a direct assault is not the safest solution.
Batman: Vengeance also varies its perspective and pace with vehicle and aerial missions. Players take control of the Batmobile in driving sequences and pilot the Batwing in flying stages, while some scenes ask Batman to rescue civilians during free-fall. These shifts make the PS2 release a broader Batman adventure rather than a game confined to street fights. They also complement the central detective premise: progress comes from investigating a chain of schemes, navigating danger, using the right equipment, and surviving the villains' traps.
The story brings together several familiar Gotham adversaries. After the Joker appears to die following an attempt to ensnare Batman, the investigation reaches Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn, and the Penguin's criminal world, while Commissioner Gordon, Alfred, and Batgirl support the case. The cast and presentation deliberately connect the game to the animated series: Kevin Conroy returned as Batman and Mark Hamill as the Joker, joined by performers associated with those roles and characters, including Tara Strong as Batgirl, Arleen Sorkin as Harley Quinn, Diane Pershing as Poison Ivy, and Michael Ansara as Mr. Freeze.
Although Batman: Vengeance began on PlayStation 2, it later reached GameCube, Xbox, and Windows; the handheld Game Boy Advance release shares its basic story but is a substantially different, 2D and top-down game. The PS2 version remains the original console form of the adventure, with its 3D environments, animated-series-inspired character designs, gadgets, vehicles, and voice-driven story. For players exploring early PlayStation 2 superhero games, it captures an era when Batman games blended action set pieces with stealth, traversal, detective work, and a newly written animated-continuity-style tale.
