About

RPGツクール SUPER DANTE is a Japanese role-playing-game creation package for the Super Famicom, published by ASCII on March 31, 1995. Developed by Kūsō Kagaku, it adapts the PC-9801 title RPGツクール Dante98 for a cartridge-based console and became the first Super Famicom entry in the series. Rather than presenting one fixed adventure, it supplies the rules, artwork, music, and menus needed to build and test a personal turn-based RPG.

Creation begins with the game’s setting data: the author can name and configure heroes, monsters, magic, equipment, items, shops, and other basic RPG elements. These database-like settings determine the party’s abilities, enemy encounters, rewards, and the equipment available during play. The prepared graphic and sound assets make a complete game possible without drawing new art or composing music, though the system does not permit importing original graphics or BGM.

Towns, castles, and dungeons are assembled visually from supplied map parts, while the overworld is selected from four prepared field-map patterns rather than drawn freely. Events provide the link between locations, dialogue, treasure, travel, battles, and story progression. The editor calls its flags game switches; up to 200 can be used to record conditions and change what events do, giving creators a practical way to make a defeated boss stay gone or unlock a new scene.

The cartridge also includes FATE, a full sample game that can be played as an example and altered in the editor. FATE originated as an award-winning game made for RPGツクール Dante98, then was adapted for SUPER DANTE. Its inclusion lets players see how the supplied maps, characters, equipment, and event logic combine in a finished adventure before attempting their own work.

Storage shaped how users could share their creations. The cartridge holds one user-game project, and its built-in play data supports three save files. With the separately sold Turbo File Twin, users could save up to three additional user-game files, load them back into the cartridge, or take a project to another person’s cartridge. This was useful for backups and exchange, but it was far less flexible than distributing computer files and made multiple projects awkward to keep.

SUPER DANTE is therefore an approachable but tightly bounded early console RPG maker. All editing is performed with the Super Famicom controller rather than a keyboard or mouse, so entering dialogue and organizing larger events can be laborious; its small capacity also favors short games. The following year’s RPGツクール2 expanded the Super Famicom formula with tile-based map editing and other improvements, placing SUPER DANTE as the foundational console step between the PC-era Dante98 tools and later, more expressive ツクール releases.
