About
Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Burning Earth for Nintendo DS is a 2007 action-adventure from TOSE and THQ, based on Book Two: Earth of Nickelodeon’s animated series. Released in North America in October 2007, it continues the 2006 Avatar game and puts Aang’s campaign against the Fire Nation into a handheld, top-down adventure. European releases use the title Avatar: The Legend of Aang – The Burning Earth, with some territories receiving localized titles as well. This Nintendo DS edition is its own version of the multi-platform release, rather than a portable copy of the console game.
The story follows Aang, Katara, Sokka and their allies as the group travels through the Earth Kingdom during the television series’ second season. Their route takes in the conflict around General Fong, the occupied city of Omashu, the search for an earthbending teacher, the swamp, Wan Shi Tong’s library and Ba Sing Se. Familiar figures including Toph, Zuko, Iroh, Jet, Momo and Appa appear as the group’s journey develops, while the Fire Nation’s plan to attack the Earth Kingdom with a drill provides the central threat toward the end of the adventure.
Play unfolds from an overhead perspective as players guide the party through connected locations, look for routes through hazards and confront groups of enemies. Aang’s airbending, Katara’s waterbending and the other characters’ individual attacks give the game a changing set of options in battle. Direct attacks can knock enemies back, and special techniques consume chi, encouraging players to choose when to spend their more powerful moves. Character growth unlocks additional abilities over the course of the campaign, making later encounters broader than the opening battles.
The Nintendo DS design also uses brief touch-screen and button-driven activities alongside exploration and combat. Story moments include tasks such as healing wounded soldiers with Katara, repairing an object while avoiding detection, gathering honey during Appa’s journey and finding requested books in the library. A late sequence involving the Fire Nation drill asks the player to maintain a fast, repeating input rhythm as Aang and Katara work together against its weak points. These diversions give the DS version a structure that mixes action scenes with small challenges tied to locations from the show.
The game adapts selected events from Book Two rather than trying to reproduce every episode in sequence. Aang’s need to learn earthbending, the introduction of Toph and the pressure on Ba Sing Se place the story squarely in the Earth Kingdom chapter of the series. The campaign presents those ideas through its own game progression, connecting battles, travel and story scenes into a single-player licensed adventure. It is followed by Avatar: The Last Airbender – Into the Inferno, which moved on to material associated with the show’s third season.
For players exploring Avatar games on the Nintendo DS, The Burning Earth is a distinctly handheld interpretation of Aang’s middle-season journey. Its top-down presentation, chi-based special attacks, growing move sets and stylus-era side activities separate it from the other platform versions released in 2007. The result is a compact action-adventure built around bending techniques, Team Avatar’s travels and the escalating Fire Nation conflict that defines this part of the animated series.
