About
Chip's Challenge SNES is a licensed Super Nintendo release of Epyx's top-down puzzle game, published by The Retro Room Games in late 2021. The game itself began as an Atari Lynx launch title in 1989, but this cartridge brought its grid-based obstacle courses to Nintendo's 16-bit hardware decades later. It follows Chip McCallahan, a would-be member of Melinda the Mental Marvel's Bit Busters Club, who must clear a long chain of tests inside the club's elaborate clubhouse. The Super Nintendo edition is therefore a later conversion of the original game, not a previously issued 1990s SNES release.
Every stage in Chip's Challenge is viewed from above and built from square tiles. Chip moves one space at a time through rooms full of walls, water, doors, sockets, hazards, and roaming creatures. The basic goal is usually to gather the required number of computer chips, unlock the chip socket, and reach the exit. That simple rule supports very different kinds of problems: a level may ask for a careful route through a maze, a quick escape from enemies, or a solution based on arranging the room's objects in the right order.
Keys open matching locked doors, while special footwear lets Chip cross particular dangers such as water, fire, ice, or force floors. Buttons and switches can alter the layout, and movable blocks can plug gaps or become makeshift bridges. These pieces interact in ways that make observation important before committing to a move. A seemingly safe item can be needed elsewhere, a creature can block a corridor at the wrong time, and one bad push can leave a route unusable. Many courses also impose a timer, adding urgency to puzzles that might otherwise be solved at a leisurely pace.
The campaign presents more than a hundred stages and steadily expands the rule set rather than relying on a single puzzle trick. Some rooms reward deliberate planning and inventory management; others demand movement timing as Chip avoids moving hazards and navigates rapidly changing floors. The challenge comes from learning a consistent set of tile behaviors, then applying them to increasingly dense combinations. Passwords provide a way to return to or enter individual stages, a useful feature for a game whose later puzzles can require repeated attempts and experimentation.
For Super Nintendo players, Chip's Challenge is a modern physical release of a foundational Epyx puzzle design. Its 2021 publication by The Retro Room Games was made under an Epyx sublicense, placing the game on original SNES hardware alongside its earlier Lynx, computer, and other home-system editions. The premise gives the progression a playful school-club frame, but the lasting focus is the compact logic of its rooms: collect the chips, understand the rules, preserve a path to the exit, and find a solution before time runs out.
