About

Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion for Nintendo 64 is a first-person shooter released in 2000. Developed by Acclaim Studios Austin and published by Acclaim Entertainment, it is the third main entry in the N64 Turok series and follows Turok 2: Seeds of Evil. The game shifts the role of Turok to two members of the Fireseed family, Danielle and Joseph, as they confront Oblivion, an ancient entity threatening the world beyond the Lost Lands. This is the Nintendo 64 adventure, not the separately made Game Boy Color game that shares its title and setting but tells a different story.

The campaign begins after Joshua Fireseed, the current Turok, is attacked by Oblivion's forces. Danielle and Joseph escape with help from Adon and are drawn into the conflict over who will carry the Turok legacy forward. At the start of a new game, the player selects either sibling. That choice does more than change the character model: the two heroes have different movement skills, tools, weapon upgrades, and routes through the same larger missions, giving the single-player story two distinct ways to approach its environments.

Danielle is built around reaching elevated paths. Her magnetic grappling hook helps her access high routes, and she can jump higher than Joseph. Joseph takes a lower, more covert path in places, fitting through tight crevices and air ducts; he can also pair a sniper rifle with night-vision goggles. Both characters carry a mixture of shared and individual firearms, and each has eight principal weapons that can be upgraded. Some upgrades change the practical behavior of familiar arms, so the selected Fireseed affects both navigation and combat rather than merely offering a difficulty variation.

Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion N64 uses a direct first-person control scheme for shooting, looking, movement, jumping, and equipment use while sending the player through a sequence of story-driven chapters. The game favors an advancing campaign instead of the key-hunting structure associated with earlier series entries: areas lead forward into the next objective, with cutscenes carrying the Fireseed story between confrontations. Its urban and science-fiction locations place enemies, scripted incidents, and battles around the player as the siblings work toward Oblivion's stronghold.

The Nintendo 64 cartridge also includes a substantial split-screen multiplayer mode for one to four players. It supports computer-controlled bots and offers several competitive rule sets, including Blood Lust, Capture the Flag, Last Stand, and Monkey Tag. Character selection matters here as well, because multiplayer fighters have their own weapon loadouts. The mode's many arenas and variants made it a separate local-play component alongside the solo campaign, rather than a small add-on.

Acclaim Studios Austin designed the game to run on a standard Nintendo 64 without requiring the Expansion Pak. Owners with the accessory could use optional display settings, while the underlying engine was reworked for a wider view and extended scenery compared with Turok 2. The original release also permits saving progress with a Controller Pak. These details belong specifically to the 2000 N64 version; later remastered releases are separate editions, and the 2023 remaster does not retain the original multiplayer component.

Within the original Turok run, Shadow of Oblivion closes the Nintendo 64 trilogy that began with Turok: Dinosaur Hunter and continued through Seeds of Evil. Its dual-protagonist design distinguishes it from the earlier games: choosing Danielle or Joseph changes the journey through the same crisis, while the campaign and local multiplayer offer two complementary sides of Acclaim's late Nintendo 64 shooter. For players exploring the series on its original hardware, it provides the conclusion to that storyline with branching character-specific traversal at its center.
