About

Mermaid Melody: Pichi Pichi Pitch for Game Boy Advance is a Japanese rhythm-action game from Konami, released in Japan on October 9, 2003. Based on the animated adaptation of the shōjo fantasy series, it puts the musical identity of Mermaid Melody at the center of a handheld game. Konami Computer Entertainment Japan developed the title, which arrived while the television anime was on the air and introduced Game Boy Advance players to the series’ ocean princesses through an interactive song-performance format.

The game is built around timing button presses to musical prompts as songs play. Rather than following a traditional adventure structure, each performance asks the player to keep pace with an on-screen sequence and maintain a successful rhythm. It has three difficulty settings, giving newcomers and more experienced rhythm-game players different ways to approach the same material. Strong performances can unlock the option to save songs and view the associated performance presentation, so improvement and replaying individual tracks are important parts of the game’s progression.

Its presentation draws on the central premise of Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch. Lucia Nanami is a mermaid princess who comes to the human world in search of a boy she once saved, while the story’s heroines use their transformed idol-singer identities and voices against supernatural enemies. The Game Boy Advance game translates that music-focused concept into playable performances rather than attempting to retell every event from the manga or television series. Players can select characters where a song permits it, and the song list incorporates music associated with the anime, making the soundtrack the game’s main link to the source material.

The single-player menu offers a mode for choosing a song, character, difficulty, and play style, along with a continuous option that strings applicable songs into a longer session. There is also a separate Hippo-themed mode. Konami supported up to three players through the Game Boy Advance link cable, with cooperative and competitive multiplayer options available for compatible setups. That local play makes the first game distinct from a solitary song-selection experience: its basic rhythm mechanics could be used either to perform alongside friends or to compare results.

Mermaid Melody: Pichi Pichi Pitch was the first of three Konami Game Boy Advance games based on the anime. It was followed later in 2003 by Pichi Pichi Party, a board-game-style release, and in 2004 by Pichi Pichitto Live Start!, another music-oriented installment. The original game consequently stands as the series’ first handheld adaptation and establishes the format most closely associated with Mermaid Melody on the system: compact rhythm challenges, anime songs, and a focus on Lucia and her fellow mermaid princesses’ performances.
