About

Ready 2 Rumble Boxing for Nintendo 64 is an arcade-style boxing game released in late 1999. Published by Midway, this Nintendo 64 edition was developed by Point of View, while Midway’s San Diego studio created the original Dreamcast game. It turns professional boxing into a colorful, theatrical contest rather than a simulation, filling its rings with outsized fighters, comic introductions, and the familiar presence of ring announcer Michael Buffer. The result is a 3D boxing game built around direct, quick-to-learn bouts and extravagant personalities.

A match is fought from a third-person view around a full ring, with players moving their boxer into range and choosing strikes, defensive maneuvers, and evasive actions. Jabs, hooks, uppercuts, blocks, and dodges give a fight more options than simply trading punches, while the game’s accessible arcade approach keeps the focus on timing and positioning. Each competitor has individual attributes and a distinctive fighting style, so choosing a boxer affects the rhythm of a bout as well as its presentation.

The central mechanic is the RUMBLE meter. Successful hard shots add letters toward spelling the word RUMBLE, rewarding players who can land meaningful offense. Once the meter is complete, the fighter can enter a powered-up state and attempt that character’s Rumble Flurry: a special multi-hit attack that can inflict major damage if it connects. This system gives a round a changing tempo, since a player must decide whether to keep applying pressure, protect a lead, or look for the opening needed to turn a charged meter into a decisive sequence.

Ready 2 Rumble Boxing also makes damage visible as a contest continues. Faces can show swelling and bruising as punishment accumulates, complementing the game’s exaggerated character animation and making the state of a fight easy to read at a glance. The roster mixes fictional boxers with deliberately broad names, looks, taunts, and national stereotypes, including prominent series regular Afro Thunder. On Nintendo 64, J.R. Flurry is the version-exclusive fighter, setting this cartridge apart from the Dreamcast and PlayStation releases, which have their own exclusive competitors.

The game offers arcade play for immediate matches, head-to-head bouts for two players, and a championship-oriented mode that extends the experience beyond a single exhibition. In the championship mode, a selected boxer works through fights while training and management form part of the route toward the belt. That combination gives the N64 game room for both short sessions and a more sustained climb, while local multiplayer lets two people choose from the roster and test their preferred fighters against one another.

As part of Midway’s late-1990s push toward sports games with a bold arcade identity, Ready 2 Rumble Boxing stands apart from more straight-faced boxing titles of its era. Its Nintendo 64 conversion preserves the series’ character-driven spectacle, 3D ring action, visible battle wear, and risk-reward super move while adapting the game to cartridge hardware. It was followed by Ready 2 Rumble Boxing: Round 2 in 2000, but the first Ready 2 Rumble Boxing remains the introduction to its distinctive blend of accessible boxing controls and cartoon combat-show flair.
