About

Hydro Thunder Nintendo 64 is a fast, arcade-style powerboat racing game published by Midway and developed for the system by Eurocom. Released in North America in March 2000, it adapts Midway's 1999 arcade hit for the Nintendo 64 with a focus on exaggerated speed, hazardous water courses, and futuristic craft rather than simulation racing. The setting moves from recognizable locations to deliberately fantastical disasters, making every event feel like a race through a stunt-filled attraction.

A race is a fight against rival boats and the clock. Players steer with the Control Stick or Control Pad, use A to accelerate and B to brake or reverse, and can switch among several camera views. Reaching checkpoints replenishes the time allowance needed to stay in contention, while the quickest route is rarely just the widest channel. Choppy water, narrow passages, ramps, obstacles, and sharp turns demand both precise steering and an eye for opportunities ahead.

Boost fuel is the center of Hydro Thunder's risk-and-reward design. Blue and red boost pickups restore different amounts of energy, and a stored charge can be spent for a burst of speed. Boosting is useful for recovering from a mistake, overtaking an opponent, or powering through a section of rough water, but it also enables the Hydro Jump. By combining acceleration, braking, and boost, a boat can launch into the air to reach elevated pickups, ramps, and shortcuts that are otherwise out of reach.

The game begins with three selectable boats and three courses, then opens more content as the player progresses. Boats and tracks are grouped into easy, medium, hard, and bonus categories. The choice of craft matters: some boats favor forgiving handling, while others trade stability for greater speed or more aggressive collision behavior. Finishing strongly on the available events unlocks the next tier, giving solo play a clear path from accessible races to more demanding routes and bonus challenges.

Hydro Thunder's courses turn water racing into an international fantasy tour. Events range from icy seas and ancient-looking waterways to elaborate, danger-filled environments where route knowledge can matter as much as outright speed. Each circuit hides alternate lines and secrets, so repeated attempts encourage players to learn when to conserve boost, when to jump, and where a risky detour can produce a decisive advantage. The game retains the broad selection of boats and courses associated with the console editions, including bonus content beyond the original arcade lineup.

The Nintendo 64 release has a particularly notable local multiplayer option. It supports split-screen racing for up to four players when an N64 Expansion Pak is installed; without that accessory, the game supports the lower player counts available to the base hardware. Rumble Pak and Controller Pak compatibility are also listed in the manual. This makes the cartridge distinct from the PlayStation version, which added a career mode, while the Dreamcast edition more closely resembled the arcade presentation. Across its versions, Hydro Thunder belongs to Midway's Thunder line of high-energy racers, and the Nintendo 64 port preserves its direct, pick-up-and-play take on powerboat competition.
