About

Donkey Kong 64 brings Nintendo’s famous ape into a sprawling 3D platform adventure built around discovery, character switching, and an enormous island to explore. Developed by Rare and published by Nintendo, it arrived for Nintendo 64 in 1999. The game turns DK Isle into a connected playground of jungle ruins, factories, caverns, temples, and other themed regions, with each new area opening more of King K. Rool’s invasion for the Kongs to unravel.

The trouble begins when the Kremling king launches an assault on DK Isle. K. Rool’s scheme centers on the Blast-O-Matic, a colossal weapon intended to wipe out the Kongs’ home, while Donkey Kong’s friends are captured and locked away. Starting as Donkey Kong, players break into K. Rool’s operation, rescue the other members of the team, and work toward stopping the plan before the island is destroyed. The setup gives the journey a cheerful Saturday-morning sense of peril without losing the series’ cartoon character.

The five playable Kongs are the heart of the adventure. Donkey Kong provides the all-round foundation, with his Coconut Cannon and strength for heavy switches and levers. Diddy Kong combines speed with his Peanut Popguns, Chimpy Charge, and Rocketbarrel flight. Tiny Kong can shrink with Mini-Monkey and cross gaps by spinning her ponytail, while Lanky Kong’s unusual reach and aerial moves make him a specialist for awkward spaces. Chunky Kong brings brute force, lifting and smashing obstacles that the others cannot move. Their individual weapons, instruments, and Cranky’s purchasable abilities mean a familiar room can become a fresh puzzle after another Kong joins the team.

Exploration revolves around collecting Golden Bananas to unlock further worlds, alongside color-coded bananas assigned to particular characters. Banana coins fund upgrades from Funky and Cranky, and every region layers in switches, doors, barrels, enemies, and secrets designed around the Kongs’ different skills. Warp pads shorten return trips across the large stages, while character barrels let the player select the right Kong for a task. The result is an adventure where observation matters: a locked route, distant ledge, or suspicious target often becomes accessible only after finding the appropriate move.

Rare mixes platforming with a wide range of diversions. Mine-cart runs, barrel-launch challenges, races, target shooting, timing tests, and small puzzle rooms punctuate the search for bananas. Boss battles demand more than simply reaching the end of a stage, since progress into them is tied to the bananas each Kong gathers. Collectors can also track down blueprints, Banana Fairies, and other optional secrets, and the game hides playable versions of the original Donkey Kong and Jetpac within its world. That variety gives its large-scale treasure hunt an arcade-like rhythm between bouts of exploration.

The single-player quest is complemented by multiplayer games for two to four players. These competitive modes put the Kongs and their projectile weapons into arenas for battles, score contests, and survival-style rounds. They are a distinct counterpoint to the long adventure, letting friends turn the same character-specific arsenal into quick local challenges. The game also supports the Nintendo 64 Rumble Pak, adding tactile feedback to its action.

Donkey Kong 64 is especially notable as a major Nintendo 64 release that came packaged with, and requires, the Nintendo 64 Expansion Pak. The added memory supported the game’s technical ambitions, from its large 3D spaces to effects such as dynamic lighting. Its animated cast, bright environments, Grant Kirkhope score, and famously exuberant opening rap capture Rare’s late-N64 style at full volume. For players who enjoy combing through levels, learning a cast of complementary abilities, and steadily converting inaccessible corners into new routes, it remains a distinctive and ambitious chapter in Donkey Kong history.
