About

Backyard Baseball 2006 for Game Boy Advance is a 2005 arcade-style baseball game published by Atari. Created with teams from Humongous Interactive and GameBrains, it brings the Backyard Sports formula to Nintendo's handheld: a child-sized take on Major League Baseball in which familiar pros and the series' original neighborhood athletes share the diamond. Players assemble a squad, choose a club, and take part in brisk games that present baseball with colorful backyard surroundings and accessible controls.

At the plate, the focus is on reading the incoming pitch and choosing an approach before swinging. The directional controls let a batter select different batting styles, including power-oriented and line-drive options, while the A Button commits to the swing. Pitching works from a locator, allowing the player to select a pitch and place it around the strike zone. When the ball is put in play, the game switches attention to the defender nearest it; moving into position, catching fly balls, and directing throws around the bases are all part of protecting a lead.

The Game Boy Advance release supports quick play for an immediate random matchup, standalone games in which both sides are selected, and a season mode built around making a team and continuing through a saved schedule. Season play also provides ways to adjust a lineup and fielding assignments, follow player statistics, and check postseason information. Options for six- or nine-inning games, errors, and several difficulty settings let a session be tailored to the desired pace and challenge.

Backyard Baseball 2006 includes Major League Baseball teams and turns a selection of real professional players into animated kids alongside the Backyard Kids. The roster includes series regulars such as Pablo Sanchez, Pete Wheeler, Kiesha Phillips, and Kenny Kawaguchi, while licensed players provide another way to build a lineup. Selecting a professional player for that athlete's MLB club can confer a bonus, giving team selection an added strategic wrinkle beyond choosing favorite characters.

Beyond the standard baseball modes, Home Run Derby centers on hitting long balls, and Fielder's Challenge shifts the emphasis to defensive play. The cartridge also supports multiplayer through two Game Boy Advance systems, two game paks, and a link cable; players can face each other head-to-head, compete in Home Run Derby, or trade players. These alternatives complement the season format and make the portable version useful for both short contests and longer team-building play.

The game belongs to the long-running Backyard Baseball branch of the Backyard Sports series, whose early releases established a playful blend of fictional children and licensed baseball talent. Its Game Boy Advance design translates the sport's central choices—pitch selection, timing, field placement, base running, and roster management—to a compact button layout. For fans looking for a kid-focused baseball game on the system, Backyard Baseball 2006 combines league play, minigames, and local link-cable competition in one handheld package.
