Asteroids

Asteroids is Vinicius Mesquita’s TIC-80 remaster of Atari’s classic 1979 arcade game, released on 19 March 2019. It recasts the original’s lone-ship survival challenge for TIC-80, the deliberately constrained fantasy console built for small, shareable games.

Pilot a triangular craft that turns to face a direction and uses thrust to build momentum. Movement has the familiar drifting feel: changing direction takes planning, and the ship carries its motion until thrust corrects it. The playfield wraps at every edge, so a ship, shot, or hazard that leaves one side can return from the opposite side.

Fire forward to break up the asteroid field while keeping clear of the rocks themselves. Large asteroids divide into smaller, faster fragments, making each successful hit both progress and a new close-range problem. Clearing the field starts another wave, keeping the pressure on instead of providing a final ending.

Points reward destruction, with the smaller, more difficult targets traditionally carrying the greater value. Colliding with an asteroid—or being hit by enemy fire—costs a ship, so a run lasts only as long as its supply of lives. Flying saucers periodically add a second threat, crossing the screen and firing back while the player is already managing drifting debris.

This version’s identity is its TIC-80 setting rather than the original arcade cabinet’s vector monitor: it is a compact fantasy-console game made to be played and shared as a cartridge. TIC-80 presents games through a virtual gamepad model; its standard keyboard defaults put the directional pad on the arrow keys and map the four face buttons to Z, X, A, and S. In an Asteroids-style layout, the essential actions are steering, thrusting, and firing, with the precise button assignment determined by the cart’s implementation and player mapping.
