About

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 for Dreamcast is Activision's 2000 skateboarding game, a console conversion of Neversoft Entertainment's second Tony Hawk title. Released in North America in November 2000, the Dreamcast edition was handled by Treyarch and brings the series' fast, score-driven street skating to Sega's hardware. Players choose from a roster of professional skaters, including Tony Hawk, and tackle compact 3D environments built around ramps, rails, ledges, pools, and hidden routes.

Career Mode is structured as a run of timed two-minute sessions. Each level supplies a checklist of goals: reach target scores, gather the letters in SKATE, find the hidden videotape, collect cash, or complete objectives tailored to that location. Goals can be pursued in any order during a run. Completing them opens later stages and earns money, which is used to improve a skater's abilities and acquire equipment. Competition levels change the format, asking players to put together strong runs for judges across multiple heats.

Its central challenge is linking tricks before a bail ends the combo. The Dreamcast controls let a skater turn, ollie, grab, flip, grind, slide, and use lip tricks, with directions modifying individual moves. A key addition over the first Pro Skater is the manual: balancing on two wheels allows a player to carry momentum from one obstacle to another and connect tricks that would otherwise be separate scores. Wallrides, transfers between ramps, switch skating, nollies, and fakies add further choices, while the score multiplier rewards varied chains rather than repeated single tricks.

Outside Career Mode, Single Session provides another two-minute high-score attempt, and Free Skate removes the clock for unhurried exploration. Local multiplayer supports competitive and casual variations including Trick Attack, Graffiti, Tag, HORSE, and Free Skate. Graffiti turns scenery into contested territory by assigning an object to the player who lands the stronger trick on it, while HORSE compares short turns one after another. The game also includes a park editor, allowing players to assemble a custom course from more than one hundred pieces on selectable base layouts.

The locations mix skatepark spaces with exaggerated urban and industrial settings, giving objectives a practical use for every ramp, rail, rooftop, and secret passage. Progress also uncovers additional skaters and content. Licensed professional skateboarders, branded gear, selectable boards, and the ability to build a customized skater make the game feel tied to the skate culture it depicts, while its punk and hip-hop-oriented licensed soundtrack accompanies the action. Some versions include characters or features that differ by territory or platform, so the Dreamcast release should not be confused with the separate handheld adaptations or later expanded Xbox compilation.

Although the original PlayStation version was developed by Neversoft, Treyarch produced the Dreamcast conversion. The Dreamcast edition retains the game's major modes and level-editor feature while using smoother textures and higher-quality animation than the original PlayStation release. It arrived in the same year as the PlayStation and Windows versions, before later editions for systems including Nintendo 64, Macintosh, and Xbox. The Xbox release, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2x, is a later expanded version rather than the Dreamcast game.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 builds on the formula established by Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, but the manual and broader customization give its scoring system more room to grow. Its design balances short sessions with long-term completion: a player can aim for one objective, practice a difficult gap, improve a favorite skater, or try to clear every goal in a stage. That approachable structure and the freedom to route each park in different ways made it a defining early entry in Activision's Tony Hawk series.
