About

Tomb Raider on PlayStation introduced Lara Croft in a 1996 3D action-adventure built by Core Design. Lara is an archaeologist and adventurer hired to locate the Scion, an ancient artifact whose separated pieces draw her into a larger conflict.

The journey begins in Peru and moves through ruins inspired by Greece and Egypt before reaching Atlantis. Each region is divided into interconnected chambers, caverns, tombs, and hazardous structures, so progress comes from learning the shape of a place as much as from following its route forward.

Play is viewed from behind Lara and centers on deliberate traversal. She can run, leap, climb, hang from ledges, swim, push blocks, and operate switches; the original PlayStation controls make timing and positioning central to negotiating its grid-based spaces.

Puzzles frequently turn the environment itself into the challenge. Keys, movable objects, pressure mechanisms, and multi-level rooms open new paths, while traps demand careful observation and precise movement. Optional secrets reward players who search beyond the direct route.

Combat accompanies exploration rather than replacing it. Lara begins with her signature dual pistols and can find weapons, ammunition, and health supplies while facing animals, hostile humans, and increasingly unusual creatures. Drawing weapons lets her lock onto targets, but it also limits actions that require free hands.

The PlayStation release helped establish Tomb Raider as a defining early console 3D adventure and made Lara Croft one of the medium’s best-known characters. Its mix of acrobatic platforming, environmental puzzles, cinematic camera shifts, and isolated bursts of action set the pattern for the series that followed.
