About

FIFA International Soccer for Sega Genesis/Mega Drive brought EA Sports into association football in December 1993. Developed by Extended Play Productions and published by EA Sports, it is the first entry in the FIFA series and presents international matches from an angled, television-style field view. At a time when many console football games were viewed directly from above, its diagonal perspective gave the pitch a stronger sense of depth while keeping a wide area of play in view. The Genesis version established the basic identity of a series that would continue with FIFA Soccer 95 the following year.

Matches are played between national sides, with the player taking direct control of the footballer nearest the ball and switching to another teammate when necessary. Passing, shooting, crossing, lobbing the ball, sprinting into space and attempting slide tackles form the heart of play. Defenders can challenge for possession, while a reckless tackle from behind risks a booking. The goalkeeper will dive or lunge at difficult shots, so attacks depend on creating a clear angle rather than simply kicking at goal. Corner kicks and free kicks use a small field-positioning window to help aim the delivery, whether the player chooses a direct attempt or looks for an open teammate.

The game includes 48 national teams as well as EA All Stars. Its FIFA agreement supports the international setting, country names and flags, but the squads do not use real footballers’ names or likenesses; every side instead has a roster of fictional players. Individual ratings give those players differing abilities, which affects how a team feels in possession and defence. The focus remains on national competition rather than club football, letting players pick familiar countries for one-off contests or guide a chosen side through a longer event.

FIFA International Soccer offers Exhibition, Tournament, Playoffs and League options. Exhibition is the quick route to a single match, while Tournament follows a group-and-knockout structure and Playoffs begins at the elimination stage. League mode places eight teams into a double round-robin schedule. Before kickoff, players can adjust match length, decide whether the clock runs continuously or only when the ball is live, and choose whether fouls and offside calls are active. Formations, tactical approaches and coverage assignments add another layer, allowing teams to be set up with different defensive and attacking priorities.

The Genesis cartridge supports up to four human players with Sega's 4 Way Play adapter, so participants can join either the same side or opposing teams while the computer controls the remaining footballers. Without the adapter, it remains a full single-player game against computer opposition. Its clear field view, animated players, crowd effects and match presentation were designed to make a console fixture feel more like a broadcast than a bare arcade contest. The controls still ask players to judge timing: a quick short pass can open a defence, but a hurried ball or tackle can quickly return possession to the other team.

Although FIFA International Soccer later reached systems including Super NES, Sega CD, DOS, Amiga, handhelds and 3DO, this Genesis/Mega Drive edition is the original release from which those versions followed. The later ports were not all identical: the 3DO version, for example, added alternative camera views and more detailed visuals. For Genesis players, FIFA International Soccer remains a snapshot of early-1990s console football design: international squads, configurable rules and tournaments, and an angled viewpoint that made it immediately distinct from the top-down football games around it.
