About

Chester Cheetah: Too Cool to Fool for Sega Genesis is a single-player side-scrolling platform game starring the Cheetos mascot. Released in North America in 1992, it was published by Kaneko USA and developed by System Vision. The game casts the sunglasses-wearing Chester as a zoo resident with a route out in mind: he wants to leave Four Corners Zoo for Hip City on his custom motorcycle, but the zoo keeper Mean Eugene has taken the machine apart and scattered its components through the grounds.

Each of the game’s five zoo-themed stages combines a search for a motorcycle part with the traditional goal of reaching an exit. Finding the required component is the key step in a level, so exploring routes and working out how to reach tucked-away areas matters as much as simply moving from left to right. Later stages also put Chester up against Mean Eugene and his dog, adding confrontations to the trip through the zoo.

The Genesis game uses a simple action-platform control scheme. Chester jumps to cross hazards and land on enemies, temporarily stunning many of them rather than permanently removing them. A pair of sneakers lets him build into a dash, giving the character a faster movement option when the stage design calls for it. Health is represented by Cheetos paw icons, and collectible paws can restore Chester’s condition as he works through each area.

The zoo setting gives the stages a variety of movement challenges beyond ordinary platforms. Chester can swing from vines, ride in a mine cart, and take to the air on a bird in different portions of the adventure. These set pieces sit alongside animal opponents, environmental obstacles, hidden paths, and bonus items. Sunglasses can briefly change the presentation and expose extra pickups, while a skateboard opens a bonus sequence centered on collecting additional points.

Too Cool to Fool is a licensed game built around Chester Cheetah’s early-1990s advertising persona, but the snack itself is not the focus of its story. Its colorful protagonist, slang-heavy framing, and motorcycle-assembly objective instead give the platforming quest its own cartoon premise. The North American Genesis release arrived alongside a Super NES version, making it one of the era’s mascot-led console games rather than a Mega Drive release for overseas territories.

This was Chester’s first console adventure and was followed by Chester Cheetah: Wild Wild Quest, another Kaneko-published platform game for the Genesis and Super NES. For players exploring the Genesis library, Too Cool to Fool stands as an early example of a branded character being placed in a compact, level-based action game: guide Chester across the zoo, locate every missing bike piece, and finally make his escape toward Hip City.
