About

Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive is a 1993 single-player side-scrolling platform game from Accolade. It stars Bubsy, the fast-talking bobcat at the center of the series’ debut, and places him in a comic-book-like invasion story. The title riffs on Close Encounters of the Third Kind, while its hero’s familiar question, “What could possibly go wrong?”, sets the tone for an adventure full of fast movement, cartoon danger, and yarn.

The Woolies, a group of aliens, arrive with a plan to take Earth’s supply of yarn. Bubsy has a particularly personal reason to intervene: the invaders have targeted his prized collection. His mission is to travel through their occupied territory, recover loose balls of yarn, and stop the Woolies before their scheme succeeds. The simple premise gives the action a clear focus without slowing the game down with lengthy story scenes.

Play proceeds from left to right across 2D stages, with the Genesis directional pad used to run and change direction and the action buttons handling Bubsy’s jumping moves. Bubsy can bound over gaps, land on enemies, and use his midair glide to cross wider spaces or adjust a jump. That mobility is central to the game’s identity: running momentum and aerial control make it possible to reach distant platforms, but they also demand care around abrupt drops, hazards, and enemies positioned near a landing.

Yarn balls line the routes as the game’s main collectible. Gathering 500 earns an extra life, giving thorough exploration a practical reward as well as a score target. Stages are built to encourage looking beyond the most obvious forward path, with branching stretches, hidden areas, and alternate routes mixed into the platforming. Progress means surviving the stage layouts, avoiding the hazards that can quickly end a life, and pressing onward through encounters with the Woolies and their machines.

The journey moves through varied cartoon settings rather than one continuous landscape, including wilderness and Wild West-themed areas. This changing backdrop keeps the alien threat from feeling confined to a single place, while the animated bobcat, enemy designs, voice clips, and brisk music give the Genesis version a distinctly early-1990s mascot-platformer character. Credits for this release identify Michael Berlyn as designer, Ken Macklin for Bubsy’s design and animation, Brian Silva as Bubsy’s voice, and Al Baker & Associates among the Genesis programming credits.

Although Bubsy in: Claws Encounters of the Furred Kind also appeared on Super NES in 1993, the Genesis/Mega Drive edition is its own cartridge release and helped establish the character as a mascot of the era’s platform-game boom. Bubsy returned in later games, beginning with Bubsy II in 1994. The original adventure has also been preserved alongside the Super and Mega versions in Atari’s later Bubsy in: The Purrfect Collection, making this yarn-chasing debut an important starting point for the long-running series.
