About

A Bug's Life Game Boy Color is a single-player 2D platform game based on Disney and Pixar's 1998 animated film. Developed by Tiertex Design Studios, it was released in North America by THQ on December 2, 1998; Activision published the Game Boy Color edition in Europe the following year. This is a separate handheld adaptation rather than a conversion of Traveller's Tales' three-dimensional PlayStation, Nintendo 64, and Windows game, reshaping the film's ant-sized adventure for Nintendo's color portable.

The story follows Flik, the inventive but unpopular ant worker from Ant Island. When the colony faces its annual demand for food from Hopper and his intimidating grasshopper gang, Flik sets out to help protect his home and prove his worth. The game draws its premise and central conflict from the film, placing the player in control of Flik as he works to save the colony and earn acceptance among the other ants.

Play is presented from a side-on perspective and centers on navigating platforming stages. Flik can climb, jump, crawl, search through the environment, and tackle simple obstacles and puzzles on the way forward. These actions give the compact Game Boy Color game a straightforward, level-based structure: progress depends on reading the terrain, negotiating hazards, and finding the route or solution that lets Flik continue his journey.

The handheld format makes scale an important part of the setting. The same world that is familiar from the film becomes a series of close-up challenges for a small ant, where gaps, vertical routes, and environmental barriers shape the action. Rather than reproducing the console game's behind-the-character presentation, Tiertex built a dedicated 2D platformer around the Game Boy Color's controls and screen, making it a distinct entry in the A Bug's Life game lineup.

A Bug's Life on Game Boy Color arrived during the first wave of film tie-in games for Nintendo's color handheld and offers a solo adventure aimed at players who wanted a portable version of Flik's story. Its combination of licensed characters, ant-colony stakes, side-scrolling movement, and light puzzle solving places it firmly among late-1990s family-oriented platform games, while its separate developer, viewpoint, and design make it worth distinguishing from the better-known home-console releases.
