About
Space Invaders for Game Boy Advance is Torus Games’ 2002 handheld adaptation of Activision’s Space Invaders revival, released in Japan as Space Invaders EX. It draws on the 1999 multi-platform revival rather than serving as a bare reproduction of Taito’s 1978 arcade game. The portable version retains the familiar fixed-shooter premise while building a larger campaign around it.
The player pilots the Tank across the bottom of each battlefield, moving horizontally to line up shots against alien formations advancing from above. The basic danger remains immediate: enemy fire and an invasion reaching the bottom threaten the player, while the formations must be cleared to advance. Defensive barriers offer temporary cover, but the expanded game puts more emphasis on changing enemies and encounters than the original arcade loop.
The single-player campaign moves through worlds including Pluto, Mars, Venus and Earth. Each world contains successive alien waves and culminates in a dedicated boss encounter, giving the GBA game a stage-based progression absent from the endlessly repeating 1978 design. Its three difficulty settings let players choose how demanding the invasion becomes.
Four standard alien colours appear alongside additional enemy types. Defeating four matching invaders in sequence can earn a one-use special power-up, encouraging players to consider target order as well as immediate survival. Motherships also pass over the action; destroying one can produce other advantages, such as protective shields or a double-shot upgrade.
A second Game Boy Advance, cartridge and Game Link cable enable a two-player cooperative game. Partners fight the same invasion together, making the expanded waves and bosses a shared challenge instead of the alternating turns associated with many older Space Invaders versions. The game also supports saved single-player progress so a campaign can be resumed later.
Completing the single-player game on Expert unlocks an emulation of the original arcade Space Invaders. That inclusion makes the contrast explicit: the bonus game centers on a compact formation of descending invaders and an endlessly renewing challenge, while the main GBA campaign adds planets, bosses, power-ups and cooperative play.
Torus Games developed the Game Boy Advance release and Activision published it in North America on March 19, 2002. Its revised graphics, new worlds and enemy designs distinguish this handheld edition from the earlier arcade original and from the separate Game Boy Color version of the 1999 revival.
