About
Magical Quest Starring Mickey & Minnie GBA is a 2002 Game Boy Advance action-platform game developed by Capcom with Nintendo and published by Nintendo. Known in Japan as Mickey to Minnie no Magical Quest, it reworks Capcom's 1992 Super NES adventure The Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse for Nintendo's handheld, while adding Minnie Mouse to the starring role. Players choose Mickey or Minnie for the main adventure and enter a storybook-style fantasy land after Pluto disappears during a game of catch, with Emperor Pete revealed as the culprit behind the dognapping.
The quest is built around side-scrolling stages, sub-areas, hazards and boss encounters. Mickey or Minnie can jump on foes, lift blocks and certain enemies, then whirl and throw those objects to clear a path or strike opponents. That basic throw-and-platform loop is important from the start, since enemies, switches and level obstacles often ask the player to use the scenery as much as a direct attack. Hearts extend the characters' health, while coins collected along the way can be spent at shops.
Costume changes provide the adventure's central mechanical variety. The magician outfit fires chargeable magic shots and has its own supply of magic to replenish. The firefighter outfit uses a water hose to deal with enemies, extinguish flames and move blocks, drawing from a water reserve that can be refilled. Climbing gear equips the character with a grappling hook for reaching marked points, swinging or hauling upward, and it can also grab objects. These changes give individual areas their own practical rhythm without turning Mickey and Minnie into different campaigns; their main-game abilities are the same.
The journey follows six themed levels on the way to Pete, framing a compact rescue story with familiar Disney characters rather than adapting a film plot. Goofy, Donald, Pluto and an old wizard all have places in the setup, while Pete serves as the fantasy world's emperor and final threat. The GBA conversion preserves the costume-driven structure of the Super NES original but recasts it as an adventure that can be led by either of the two Disney stars, a meaningful distinction from the earlier Mickey-only release.
This handheld edition also adds a save function and a collection of four mini-games alongside the principal platforming adventure. The mini-games support solo play or multiplayer; with Game Boy Advance link-cable equipment, two players can take part using a single game cartridge. Nintendo's Japanese release information lists the title for one or two players and supports both the Game Boy Advance link cable and the GameCube-Game Boy Advance cable. The latter connection links the game with Disney's Magical Mirror Starring Mickey Mouse on GameCube.
For Game Boy Advance players, Magical Quest Starring Mickey & Minnie offers the first Magical Quest story in a portable form, rather than the later GBA remakes of The Great Circus Mystery or Magical Quest 3. Its appeal lies in the clear platforming fundamentals and in using each costume as a tool: magic for ranged attacks, water for environmental problems, and the hook for vertical routes. The result is a Capcom Disney game whose character choice, added save support and link-oriented extras distinguish this version while its campaign remains rooted in Mickey's original search for Pluto.
