About

Famimaga Disk Vol. 5: Puyo Puyo for the Famicom Disk System is Compile's original 1991 falling-block puzzle game, distributed in Japan by Tokuma Shoten through the Famimaga Disk line on October 25. This is the early home version that introduced the series' colorful Puyo pieces and Madō Monogatari connections, rather than the later, more elaborate Sega arcade Puyo Puyo. It was a Disk Writer rewrite title for Nintendo's Famicom Disk System, giving the game a distinct place in the Famimaga Disk catalogue.

The basic challenge is immediate: guide the falling Puyo onto the playfield and link four or more of the same color to make them disappear. Clearing a group can leave the remaining pieces to drop, so a carefully placed clear can create a chain reaction and open space for the next pieces. The playfield steadily becomes harder to manage as Puyo accumulate, making placement and planning more important than simply chasing a single match.

Endless mode is the score-focused solo option. It asks the player to keep clearing Puyo for as long as possible before the field fills, with settings that can change the pace and presentation. For assistance, the mode can use either Big Puyo, which clears a broad vertical section, or Carbuncle, the familiar Madō Monogatari creature that moves across piled Puyo and changes their colors. These options give this early version its own playful variations on the central matching rules.

Mission mode shifts the emphasis from survival to puzzle-solving. It begins with prepared board situations and objectives, asking the player to remove designated Puyo or meet a particular clearing condition. The game also includes a two-player versus mode, where each participant tries to build chains that send nuisance Puyo to the other field. Unlike the later arcade version, the Famicom Disk System release does not turn single-player play into a character-by-character computer-opponent campaign; its solo focus is Endless and Mission play.

Famimaga Disk Vol. 5: Puyo Puyo is therefore an important snapshot of the series before its arcade breakthrough. Compile's 1991 design already established the satisfying rhythm of matching, falling pieces, and chains, while the mission ideas pointed toward later Nazo Puyo puzzle games. Sega and Compile's 1992 arcade Puyo Puyo expanded the concept with a competitive, opponent-based structure, and Tokuma Shoten later issued a 1993 Famicom cartridge edition with changes to versus play. The Disk System original remains the version tied directly to the Famimaga Disk series and its Disk Writer distribution.
