About
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 for PlayStation is the 2002 entry in Activision's skateboarding series, developed for the original Sony console by Vicarious Visions. It brings the arcade-style trick scoring of the earlier Pro Skater games to PS1 while presenting a version tailored to that hardware. Players choose Tony Hawk or another licensed professional skater, or build a custom rider, and head into a succession of skateable environments to earn objectives and develop their run.
The central skill is linking tricks into high-scoring combos without bailing. Skaters launch from ramps, perform aerial tricks, grind rails and ledges, and balance manuals to keep a line alive between obstacles. The PlayStation controls assign grabs, flips, grinds, lip tricks, rotation, and movement to the controller's face buttons, D-pad, shoulder buttons, and sticks, with the timing and landing angle of each move determining whether a run continues. Score goals, collection tasks, races, and stunt challenges give those mechanics a purpose beyond simply chasing a best total.
Career play changes the familiar two-minute-session rhythm by letting the player explore a stage before deciding which available task to accept. Goals are introduced by people found around the level, and success opens further opportunities. Completing enough challenges leads to pro goals tied to individual skaters, rewarding careful route planning as well as technical control. The game also tracks gaps: named connections between parts of a level that encourage players to experiment with routes, transfers, and unusual uses of the scenery.
Its PS1 campaign visits locations including a college campus, San Francisco, Alcatraz, Kona skatepark, an industrial shipyard, and London. These places mix bowls, banks, rails, rooftops, tunnels, and improvised skating surfaces, so a line can be built from both obvious ramps and overlooked geometry. This version also has its own content: Sewers and Little Big World are PlayStation-exclusive levels. The latter turns a giant kitchen counter into a miniature skater's playground, using everyday objects and elevated edges as obstacles and routes.
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 on PlayStation supports solo play and local two-player multiplayer. Its multiplayer options let two skaters share the console for score-focused sessions and other competitive modes, while the PlayStation edition does not include the online features associated with the PlayStation 2 release. The release is rated Everyone in North America, unlike the Teen-rated PlayStation 2, Xbox, and GameCube editions, another useful distinction when identifying the original PlayStation game.
As the fourth numbered Pro Skater game, this PS1 release arrived near the end of the console's commercial life but was not merely the same program scaled down from the newer systems. Vicarious Visions is credited with its PlayStation development, and the edition preserves the series' emphasis on immediate controls, combos, objectives, unlockables, custom skaters, and replayable parks while giving the system a distinct set of levels and its own take on the fourth game's freer career structure.
