About

Yoshi's Cookie for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System is a 1993 puzzle game from Bullet-Proof Software, which both developed and published this particular 16-bit edition. It shares its name, familiar Mario-world presentation, and core rule set with the earlier Nintendo-published NES and Game Boy releases, but it is not simply the same production with sharper graphics. The SNES game grew out of a project originally known as Hermetica, and Bullet-Proof retained the underlying Super NES version while using Yoshi and other licensed Nintendo characters. That history helps explain why its credits and feature set differ from the 8-bit and handheld versions associated with Tose and Nintendo.

The playfield is filled with cookies in several designs. Rather than dropping pieces in the usual falling-block fashion, the player positions a cursor over a row or column, then rotates that entire line to rearrange its contents. A line disappears when every space in it contains the same cookie type. New cookies press into the board from the top and right, steadily reducing room to work; letting the board overflow ends the game. The design makes each move a spatial decision: a rotation that finishes one line can also disturb another, create a useful alignment, or consume the time and space needed for a later clear.

A Yoshi-head cookie serves as the game's flexible special piece in the standard solo play, helping complete a line of another cookie type. The immediate goal is always to clear the board, but the pressure comes from keeping the incoming rows and columns under control while finding rotations that solve several problems at once. This gives Yoshi's Cookie a brisk, readable puzzle rhythm that is distinct from both Tetris-style stacking and Dr. Mario's color matching. Its bright cookie icons and clear grid make the essential information easy to scan even as the board becomes crowded.

The Super NES edition adds material that makes it especially notable among the original releases. Alongside the escalating Action Mode and competitive VS play, it includes a single-player VS mode against a computer opponent and a dedicated Puzzle Mode. Puzzle Mode presents predetermined cookie arrangements and asks the player to clear them within a limited number of moves, shifting the emphasis away from survival toward planning an exact sequence of rotations. The mode's levels were designed by Alexey Pajitnov, the creator of Tetris, and they give the SNES version a more deliberate, problem-solving side in addition to its quick arcade-style rounds.

Presentation also benefits from the hardware without obscuring the simple rules. The game uses colorful character art and backgrounds associated with the Super Mario World era, while Yoshi, Mario, and Princess Toadstool frame the puzzle action with a light confectionery theme. The soundtrack includes an arrangement of Hermann Necke's Csikos Post alongside original game music. Its local competitive options make the basic row-and-column mechanic easy to share, because opponents can understand a move at a glance while still discovering how much calculation sits behind an efficient clear.

Yoshi's Cookie arrived in North America in June 1993, followed by a Japanese Super Famicom release that July and a European release later that year. It therefore belongs to the early SNES puzzle library, but it stands apart through Bullet-Proof Software's authorship and its expanded modes. Later Yoshi's Cookie material appeared in Nintendo Puzzle Collection for GameCube in Japan, yet that collection does not erase the identity of the original SNES release. For players exploring Super Nintendo puzzle games, this version is the one to seek for its Puzzle Mode, computer competition, and the unusual lineage that connects a former arcade concept to a licensed Yoshi game.
