About
Wing Commander: The Secret Missions for Super NES is a 1993 space-combat simulation from Mindscape, adapting Origin Systems' first expansion campaign for the original Wing Commander. Rather than requiring the computer game as an add-on did, this console release presents the campaign on its own cartridge. Players return to the TCS Tiger's Claw during the Terran Confederation’s war with the feline Kilrathi Empire, piloting a fighter from the carrier and taking part in a focused military operation that follows the events of the first game.
The crisis begins in the Goddard system, where the Tiger's Claw answers a distressed colony’s call only to find the settlement destroyed. Confederation intelligence attributes the catastrophe to a new Kilrathi weapon and orders the carrier deep into hostile territory. The campaign becomes Operation Thor’s Hammer: a pursuit of the enemy force, its supply lines, and ultimately the dreadnought carrying the weapon. The player’s pilot is the same deliberately player-defined protagonist associated with the early Wing Commander story, while the Tiger's Claw and its familiar flight wing supply the setting between sorties.
Each mission puts the player in a cockpit view with radar, shield and armor indicators, weapon information, target displays, and a navigation system for plotting routes between mission points. The Super NES controller handles steering, speed changes, afterburner bursts, gun and missile fire, target selection, and navigation or communications functions. Autopilot can cover clear stretches between waypoints, leaving the player to manage the dogfights, hazards, and objectives that interrupt a sortie. Laser and missile use must be balanced against positioning, enemy shields, and the condition of the player’s own ship.
Secret Missions retains the series' combination of space dogfighting and command decisions. A wingman can be instructed through the communications display to break formation, attack a target, return to the Tiger's Claw, or come to the leader’s aid. Missions ask the squadron to defend ships or installations, escort larger craft, intercept incoming forces, patrol contested sectors, and strike priority targets. Briefings establish the immediate task, while post-mission returns to the carrier provide the frame for the next stage of the campaign.
The campaign is notably more direct than the first Wing Commander’s branching war path. Its sixteen new missions follow a largely fixed narrative sequence, so success in the critical operations is central to reaching the conclusion. That structure gives the Goddard investigation and the hunt for the Sivar-class dreadnought a clear through line, but also makes the later assignments demanding: the operation proceeds without the broad alternate campaign routes associated with the original game. The new capital-ship threat, together with Terran and Kilrathi freighters and a Confederation corvette, expands the kinds of vessels encountered around the familiar fighter engagements.
As a Super NES release, Wing Commander: The Secret Missions is a distinct console version of a 1990 computer expansion, published by Mindscape in North America and Europe during 1993. It is not the base Wing Commander cartridge, nor is it the later 3DO and Macintosh Super Wing Commander remake that combined and reworked earlier material. For players exploring the early Wing Commander series on Nintendo hardware, this standalone cartridge continues the Tiger's Claw era with a complete, story-led campaign built around the attempt to stop the Kilrathi superweapon.
