About
South Park for PlayStation is a first-person shooter based on Comedy Central’s animated series. Published by Acclaim Entertainment in 1999 and developed for the console by Appaloosa Interactive, it adapts the 1998 Nintendo 64 game for Sony’s system. The PlayStation release arrived in North America on September 30, 1999, with a European edition following that year. It puts the show’s small Colorado town and its deliberately crude sense of humor into a 3D action game built around an escalating supernatural emergency.
The story begins with an ominous comet approaching Earth. Its arrival brings absurd threats to South Park, from mutant turkeys and unstable copies of local residents to extraterrestrials, runaway toys, robots, and other hostile creations. Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman, and Kenny McCormick set out to investigate the outbreaks and protect their home. Chef also appears in the game, and the licensed presentation uses character voices to connect the action to the television series’ cast and comic tone.
In the single-player game, players choose one of the four boys and explore first-person stages while searching for the way forward. Progress depends on defeating enemies, picking up weapons and ammunition, and surviving hazards spread through each area. The arsenal turns familiar objects and series-style gags into projectiles, while alternate firing functions give individual weapons more than one use. Enemies are not merely obstacles on the route: larger creatures called Tanks can generate additional foes, making the order and speed of an encounter important as the player advances through a level.
A successful run also requires keeping those Tank enemies from reaching South Park before the stage is cleared. Letting one through leads to a Penalty Round, a separate defensive sequence in which the town must be protected. Stages culminate in boss confrontations, adding a bigger target at the end of each themed stretch of action. This structure gives the game a campaign-like path through the escalating invasion rather than a series of isolated shooting galleries, with the central threat and enemy groups changing as the adventure moves on.
South Park PS1 also includes a local Head-to-Head multiplayer mode for two players. Competitors can select characters and arenas, then set matches around time limits, damage limits, or open-ended play; codes discovered during single-player progression can unlock further multiplayer choices through the Cheesy Poofs Decoder. The PlayStation version is more limited than the Nintendo 64 release, which supports four players and more multiplayer arenas, but it remains a distinct console conversion rather than simply the original game on a new disc. It was the first South Park game released on PlayStation, preceding Acclaim’s later South Park: Chef’s Luv Shack and South Park Rally.
