About

Shin Megami Tensei If... is Atlus's compact, school-set branch of the Megami Tensei role-playing series, presented here in its 2002 Japanese PlayStation release. Originally made for Super Famicom in 1994, it shifts the series away from a devastated, world-spanning Tokyo and into the far more immediate confines of Karukozaka High School. That focused premise gives the game a distinctive identity: an ordinary school day becomes a supernatural emergency when a resentful student’s demon summoning drags the building and its pupils into a hostile otherworld.

Players choose an unnamed male or female protagonist and begin exploring the transformed school through the series’ familiar first-person dungeon-crawling viewpoint. Corridors, classrooms, and surrounding demon territory become a maze of encounters, choices, and escalating danger. The central threat is Ideo Hazama, whose attempt to use demonic power against the people who tormented him spirals into catastrophe. The plot’s high-school setting, troubled students, and occult crisis make If... an important precursor to the contemporary settings that later became closely associated with Persona.

Combat is turn-based and built around several classic Megami Tensei ideas. The protagonist uses a wrist-mounted COMP to fight alongside recruited demons, selecting physical attacks, magic, recovery skills, status effects, and defensive options. Conversations are as important as direct combat: demons can be approached, negotiated with, and sometimes persuaded to join the party. Recruited allies can then be brought into battle, while demon fusion lets players combine creatures to pursue different strengths, spells, and resistances. Careful party building is therefore as valuable as simply gaining levels.

A key feature is the partner system. Alongside demons, the protagonist can travel with a human schoolmate, and the chosen companion affects the route, events, and ending. Yumi Shirakawa, Shinji "Charlie" Kuroi, Reiko Akanezawa, and, on a later playthrough, Akira Miyamoto provide different perspectives on the disaster and encourage repeat visits to the game’s dungeons. Rather than treating the cast as a fixed party, Shin Megami Tensei If... makes the player’s choice of companion part of both its story structure and its replay value.

The game also introduces the Guardian system, a variation on the series’ interest in death and rebirth. When the protagonist or their human partner falls in battle, a Guardian Spirit revives them at the last save point and alters their abilities and statistics. Different Guardians favor different traits, so defeat carries a mechanical consequence beyond lost progress. This system can change how a character develops over a campaign and gives the dungeon challenge an unusual strategic layer, even when the player is learning its demanding encounters.

This PlayStation version was released by Atlus in Japan on December 26, 2002. It updates the earlier game with retouched graphics, revised character art, and an easier difficulty option, while preserving its dark dungeon RPG foundations. Shin Megami Tensei If... remains a notable entry for fans interested in Atlus history, early demon negotiation and fusion systems, branching companion routes, and the roots of the Persona series. Its self-contained school nightmare offers a different scale from the main Shin Megami Tensei adventures without abandoning the series’ fascination with demons, moral pressure, and dangerous choices.
