About
Tales of Destiny 2 PSP is the 2007 PlayStation Portable edition of Namco’s Japanese role-playing sequel, originally released for PlayStation 2 in 2002. Developed for the handheld by Alfa System and published in Japan by Namco Bandai Games, it continues the story of 1997’s Tales of Destiny eighteen years later. It should not be confused with the Western PlayStation game released as Tales of Destiny II, which was the localized title for Tales of Eternia; this Destiny 2 remained a Japanese and Korean release.
The adventure follows Kyle Dunamis, the energetic son of Tales of Destiny heroes Stahn Aileron and Rutee Katrea. Living at an orphanage run by Rutee, Kyle dreams of proving himself a hero like his parents. When he encounters the enigmatic Reala, who emerges from a giant Lens, he sets off with his longtime companion Loni. Their search draws them into a far-reaching conflict involving the Order of Atamoni, the legendary Swordians, the ruthless warrior Barbatos Goetia, and Elrane, a religious figure whose promise of universal happiness conceals a dangerous design.
Like the PlayStation 2 original, Tales of Destiny 2 PSP combines town exploration, field travel, dungeons, character scenes, side events, shops, treasure hunting, cooking, and optional Skit conversations. The world is built around detailed 2D character sprites, while the overworld adds a broader sense of travel between settlements and story locations. Dungeon progress often asks the party to solve environmental puzzles as well as survive encounters, and the journey’s time-travel elements let Kyle and his allies see how choices and competing ideals reshape their world.
Combat uses the Trust and Tactical Linear Motion Battle System, a real-time evolution of the series’ signature side-view battles. Up to four party members fight on the same plane, with the player directly controlling one character while behavior settings guide allies. Basic attacks, Artes, and powerful Mystic Artes can be linked as a fight develops, rewarding positioning, timing, and an awareness of each character’s strengths. Spirit Points influence combat performance, and the skill and Grade systems give progression beyond simply raising levels, while battle results can support further customization and repeat play.
The cast supplies much of the game’s personality. Kyle’s impulsive idealism is balanced by Loni’s more grounded support, while Reala’s identity and purpose become central to the plot. The masked swordsman Judas, archer Nanaly Fletch, and scientist Harold Belselius expand the party as the story reaches back to the setting and history of the first Tales of Destiny. Character designs by Mutsumi Inomata, animated scenes by Production I.G, and music associated with series composers Motoi Sakuraba and Shinji Tamura help place the game firmly within the early-2000s Tales tradition.
For PSP, Alfa System adapted the PS2 game’s presentation and controls to the portable format rather than remaking it from the ground up. The release adjusts the display for the handheld’s widescreen presentation, revises elements for the PSP control layout, and adds a dungeon with extra story material. These additions make Tales of Destiny 2 PSP a distinct portable version of the original direct sequel, preserving its long, character-led RPG campaign while tailoring the experience to Sony’s handheld. Its Japanese-language release history also makes the game an important example of a major Tales entry that never received an official Western edition.
