About

SSX On Tour for PSP brings EA Sports BIG’s exaggerated snowboarding and skiing series to Sony’s handheld in 2005. Published by Electronic Arts under the EA Sports BIG label, this portable installment is part of the fourth main SSX release, but it is not simply the PlayStation 2, Xbox, or GameCube game in smaller form. Development credits for the PSP edition identify EA Montreal, while the larger release was associated with EA Canada. The handheld game carries over the rough sketchbook presentation, rock-oriented identity, and high-speed mountain-sports premise of SSX On Tour in a design tailored to the PSP.

Players choose a snowboarder or skier and race downhill while linking jumps, spins, grabs, rails, and landings into scoring runs. Speed matters in races, but freestyle play is just as important: successful tricks build momentum and help turn a descent into a higher-scoring performance. The controls are arranged around the PSP’s available buttons and analogue nub, so carving, accelerating, jumping, grinding, and changing a trick are all part of negotiating a course at pace. Crashes, missed landings, and poor lines cost time, making route choice and consistency as important as attempting big air.

The main single-player mode, called the Tour, uses a more conventional sequence of unlocked events than the console game’s broad resort structure. Progress through its competition ladder is based on earning gold, silver, or bronze medals, with events divided between ski and snowboard disciplines. Race events emphasize getting to the finish first; slope-style events combine speed with trick points; and big-air events put the focus on aerial scoring. Other challenge-oriented play and individual events offer ways to revisit the game’s slopes outside that campaign progression.

SSX On Tour PSP draws much of its course material from the earlier SSX 3, recasting those runs with the newer game’s visual style and skiing option. That connection gives the handheld version a recognizable SSX 3 foundation while its event structure, menus, and presentation make it its own release. The PSP does not use the console version’s enormous connected mountain layout; instead, its courses are selected as separate events. Character customization is also more limited on the handheld edition, so its career approach is less centered on building a fully personalized rider than the home-console counterpart.

The game’s visual personality separates it from the sleek look of earlier SSX entries. Menus and interface art resemble rough notebook drawings, with scribbled imagery and a deliberately unruly youth-culture tone framing each descent. Snowy runs are packed with ramps, rails, alternate lines, and oversized obstacles built for arcade-style movement rather than simulation. Familiar SSX riders remain part of the roster and opposition, while the player’s selected athlete is the focus of the Tour. The Nintendo character cameos found in the GameCube version do not belong to this PSP edition.

Local wireless multiplayer gives SSX On Tour on PSP a competitive option beyond its solo modes, allowing up to four nearby PSP systems to compete in ad hoc races. Its mixture of racing and trick scoring reflects the balance that defines the series: a fast line can win an event, yet a well-timed jump or grind can transform a run’s score. For PSP owners, SSX On Tour preserves the series’ essential downhill spectacle while adapting its tracks, progression, customization, and multiplayer to a portable format.
