About

Def Jam: Fight for NY: The Takeover is the 2006 PSP entry in EA's hip-hop fighting series, developed by EA Canada with Japan's AKI Corporation. Rather than a simple retelling of the 2004 console release, this portable adaptation reworks its street-fighting framework around a new story, while retaining the licensed performers, music, and bruising one-on-one action that define the series.

The campaign is presented as a prequel to the earlier Def Jam games. After rescuing tattoo artist and fighter Manny, the player creates an unknown up-and-comer and is drawn into New York's underground fight crews. Matches across the city's boroughs build the character's reputation, turning a personal rise through bars, clubs, parking lots, and back alleys into a struggle for control of the city.

Combat mixes punches, kicks, grapples, throws, and reversals instead of treating every contestant as a conventional wrestler. A created fighter begins with a fighting discipline and can develop a blend of wrestling, submissions, kickboxing, martial arts, and street fighting. Training points unlock moves and further styles, allowing a character to combine up to three approaches or deepen a preferred one for a more specialized moveset.

Every arena is part of the fight. Players can drive opponents into walls and other scenery, throw them toward spectators who may hold them in place, and seize weapons offered by the crowd. The aim is to force a knockout or submission, with successful attacks and taunts building the meter for a character's signature Blazin' offense. The PSP version adds mounted grapples, letting a fighter climb onto a grounded opponent for a flurry of punches or transition into a hold.

Story progress also feeds into character building. Wins provide the means to buy licensed clothing, hairstyles, tattoos, jewelry, and fighting upgrades, creating a brawler whose look is tied to charisma and the rate at which the finishing meter fills. The roster places original characters alongside hip-hop artists and celebrities, giving its fictional underground circuit a distinctly Def Jam-styled cast.

Away from the campaign, Battle Mode provides standalone fights against the computer, and two nearby PSP systems can face off through wireless ad hoc multiplayer. The handheld conversion adjusts its controls for the hardware: the D-pad handles Blazin' moves, the shoulder button is used for blocks and reversals, and the camera stays close to the action. It also shifts fights to one-on-one contests, while preserving the interactive arena design that makes positioning, crowd interference, and environmental damage central to each bout.
