About
Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie for Nintendo DS is Ubisoft's handheld action-adventure based on Peter Jackson's 2005 King Kong film. Published by Ubisoft, this Nintendo DS version reached North America in November 2005 and Japan in May 2006. It takes the film's Skull Island premise as its starting point: screenwriter Jack Driscoll joins filmmaker Carl Denham and actress Ann Darrow on an expedition that turns into a struggle against the island's creatures and its giant ape. Although it shares a title and central characters with the console releases, the DS game is a separate portable interpretation designed around the system's two screens and touch controls.
Most of Peter Jackson's King Kong on Nintendo DS is played from Jack's first-person viewpoint. Players make their way through jungles, ruins, caves, and other Skull Island locations while confronting hostile wildlife. Jack's survival depends on advancing through the stages, finding a route forward, and making use of the weapons available to him when dangerous creatures block the way. Firearms provide the primary means of defense, while the lower DS screen handles supporting information such as ammunition. This arrangement keeps the main view focused on the path ahead while placing key status details and touch-based input on the companion screen.
The Nintendo DS touch screen also gives the handheld edition a control feature of its own. It can be used like a trackball to turn Jack's view, complementing the system's buttons during the first-person sequences. The game therefore combines movement and combat in the upper-screen action with a second-screen interface intended for aiming and information. The design follows the film adaptation's emphasis on moving through a hostile expedition rather than treating Skull Island as a free-roaming setting: progress is built around a series of discrete levels, obstacles, enemies, and set-piece encounters.
Jack is not the only playable character. At selected points, control shifts to King Kong, changing both the camera and the style of play. These third-person sections put the player in command of the ape as he confronts oversized opponents and works through environmental barriers. Kong can use his strength to attack foes, climb walls, and swing across gaps, making his stages a contrast to Jack's more vulnerable first-person journey. The two perspectives reflect the story's central conflict, alternating between the human attempt to reach Ann and Kong's battles across the island.
Skull Island supplies the setting and much of the game's danger, with prehistoric creatures and giant insects turning the movie tie-in into a mixture of shooter, action, and traversal sequences. Ann Darrow, Carl Denham, and Jack Driscoll anchor the adventure to the 2005 film, while Kong's playable appearances bring its title character directly into the action. For Nintendo DS players, Peter Jackson's King Kong: The Official Game of the Movie is notable as a platform-specific version of Ubisoft's large 2005 film-game release: it preserves the alternating Jack-and-Kong concept but reorganizes it for portable hardware, dual displays, and stylus-assisted controls.
