About
WWF SmackDown! Just Bring It for PlayStation 2 is a professional wrestling game developed by Yuke's and published by THQ. Released in Europe and North America in November 2001, it was the third WWF SmackDown! game, the series' first move to PlayStation 2, and the follow-up to WWF SmackDown! 2: Know Your Role. It brings the television world of the World Wrestling Federation to the ring with a roster drawn from the turn-of-the-millennium WWF era, complete with licensed wrestlers, arenas, entrances, and championship competition.
Matches are built around fast arcade-style striking, grappling, Irish whips, aerial attacks, weapon use, pinfalls, submissions, and finishing moves. Directional inputs change the move selected during a grapple, while the SmackDown! Meter is used to earn the chance to perform a wrestler's signature finish. The game also introduced a broader counter system, allowing many attacks to be reversed and, in some cases, countered again. Its PlayStation 2 controls use the face buttons for attacks and grapples, with shoulder buttons handling actions such as running, taunting, and the finisher commands.
Exhibition play lets one to four local players stage WWF bouts across a variety of rulesets. Alongside one-on-one and tag-team matches, the game includes larger multi-wrestler contests, battle royals, hardcore-style fights, cage matches, ladder matches, tables matches, Hell in a Cell, and other special stipulations. Wrestlers can fight beyond the ropes as well as in the ring, using ringside items such as chairs and tables. Six-man tags and crowded battle royals were notable additions, allowing far more bodies in a match than the earlier PlayStation entries.
Story Mode replaces the previous games' Season Mode with a title-focused single-player path. Players select a wrestler, decide which WWF championship to pursue, and progress through a sequence of match scenarios and choices. Completing these routes can unlock additional wrestlers, arenas, and match options. The game also offers extensive creation and customization material, including a Create-a-Wrestler system with thousands of parts, layer-based costume editing, and the ability to alter the movesets of the existing roster.
Just Bring It uses presentation elements recognizable from WWF programming of the period. Full wrestler entrances include video on the TitanTron, and Michael Cole and Tazz provide the series' first play-by-play commentary. Its venue selection includes versions of Raw Is War and SmackDown! sets from 2000 and 2001, plus event-branded rings. The roster reflects a roster cutoff during the WWF Invasion period, so it captures a particular moment in the company's changing on-screen lineup rather than every performer who later became prominent in that storyline.
In Japan, the same PlayStation 2 game was released in January 2002 as Exciting Pro Wrestling 3, published there by Yuke's. Following the WWF's 2002 name change to WWE, later North American Greatest Hits and European Platinum editions were retitled WWE SmackDown! Just Bring It, although the game itself remained rooted in its original WWF era. As the bridge between the first two PlayStation SmackDown! titles and the subsequent PS2 installments, it established features and presentation ideas that the series continued to develop in WWE SmackDown! Shut Your Mouth and beyond.
