About

Twisted Metal Head-On Extra Twisted Edition PS2 is a 2008 vehicular-combat release from Eat Sleep Play and Sony Computer Entertainment. Released in North America for PlayStation 2, it brings the 2005 PSP game Twisted Metal: Head-On to the home console while substantially enlarging the package. It is not simply another entry bearing the Head-On name: the PS2 disc combines the main tournament, a new arena, playable material derived from an unfinished project, and a sizeable collection of series history.

The central contest follows the familiar Twisted Metal premise. The mysterious Calypso invites drivers and their armed vehicles into a lethal tournament, promising the survivor a wish. Each machine has its own driver, character identity, durability, speed, special attack, and ending, so selecting a vehicle also selects a different combat approach and story outcome. Sweet Tooth and his ice-cream truck are among the series fixtures, but the action is built around the full selection of weaponized rides rather than a single hero.

Matches are arena battles in which positioning, weapon pickups, and survival matter as much as raw driving. Vehicles carry machine guns, can use turbo boosts, and have a vehicle-specific special weapon, while collected armaments turn the scenery into a source of cover, routes, and danger. Combat asks players to circle opponents, evade incoming fire, search the arena for useful supplies, and decide when to spend a powerful attack. The result is a vehicle game focused on close-quarters duels and crowded free-for-all encounters rather than traditional racing.

Story Mode sends a chosen driver through increasingly demanding arenas and rewards completion with that character’s conclusion. Challenge Mode allows a more configurable fight against computer-controlled rivals by selecting a vehicle, an arena, and opponents. Endurance Mode instead tests how long a player can withstand a continuing assault. The PS2 edition also supports local two-player split-screen, making its competitive battles playable head-to-head on one console; unlike the PSP original, this version does not include its online feature.

Extra Twisted Edition distinguishes itself through additions designed for the PS2 release. The core game received updated presentation and the exclusive Transylvania Castle arena. It also includes four “Lost” levels built from work on an unreleased Twisted Metal: Black sequel; these bonus arenas were designed with two-player deathmatch in mind. That makes the release both a conversion of Head-On and an unusual glimpse at material that had not reached a finished standalone game.

The disc’s archive features make its expanded identity especially clear. Sweet Tour lets players control Sweet Tooth on foot in an exploration area, collecting icons that unlock concept art and behind-the-scenes information. The package also contains The Dark Past documentary, an art booklet, unreleased live-action ending movies made for the first Twisted Metal, and a code that originally provided access to the Twisted Metal Symphony soundtrack collection. As Eat Sleep Play’s first release, Twisted Metal: Head-On Extra Twisted Edition PS2 serves as a late PlayStation 2 celebration of a long-running PlayStation combat series, preserving its arena warfare alongside an assortment of new and historical extras.
