About

Tony Hawk's Underground 2 for PlayStation 2 is a 2004 skateboarding game developed by Neversoft and published by Activision. It is the sixth main console release in the Tony Hawk's series and follows 2003's Tony Hawk's Underground, bringing its customizable skater and story-driven approach into a much rowdier World Destruction Tour. The PS2 version arrived alongside the Xbox and GameCube editions in October 2004; it is the original console release, distinct from the later PlayStation Portable game Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Remix.

Play revolves around building score-heavy trick combinations while moving through large 3D skate environments. Players ollie, grind, manual, lip trick and perform flip or grab tricks, then link those actions together before landing to bank a combo. Objectives reward both precision and exploration: a session may ask for a target score, a particular stunt, a route through the scenery, or a disruptive challenge tailored to the location. The game retains the series' quick, arcade-like handling while asking players to use ramps, rails, ledges and street furniture as parts of longer lines.

The central Story mode casts the created skater in a competition between teams led by Tony Hawk and Bam Margera. Its deliberately chaotic tour travels through locations including Boston, Barcelona, Berlin, Australia, New Orleans and Skatopia, with professional skaters and Jackass-associated personalities appearing as part of the event. The tone is more prank-driven than the previous Underground, but the campaign still supplies the structured goals, unlocks and changing destinations that turn a collection of skate parks into a connected progression.

Tony Hawk's Underground 2 adds several mechanics to the familiar scoring system. Focus can be activated with a full Special meter to slow the action and make balance-based tricks easier to manage. The Natas Spin lets a skater rotate on small objects such as posts, while Sticker Slap adapts the earlier wallplant idea into a wall-based move that can keep a run moving. A Freak Out sequence can also turn certain hard falls into an opportunity to resume play. These additions sit beside manuals, grinds and reverts, giving players more ways to avoid ending a carefully built combo.

Classic mode provides a different structure for PS2 players who prefer the older Tony Hawk's Pro Skater format. Instead of the tour narrative, it uses timed two-minute sessions with a set of goals, including score challenges, collectible items and hidden-tape-style objectives. Its selection includes new stages as well as reworked areas from earlier Neversoft Tony Hawk games, making it a useful counterpart to Story mode rather than a replacement for it. The PlayStation 2 release also supports local two-player play and online multiplayer, extending its challenge-based skating beyond the solo campaign.

The game uses a roster built around real skateboarders such as Hawk, Bob Burnquist, Eric Koston, Rodney Mullen, Chad Muska and Mike Vallely, alongside unlockable special characters. Players can skate as the customized protagonist or choose from the featured cast, while create-a-park and customization options encourage experimentation outside the tour. Its licensed soundtrack, globe-spanning locations and combination of old-school timed goals with the Underground formula place Tony Hawk's Underground 2 squarely in the mid-2000s peak of the series. For PlayStation 2 owners, it remains a substantial entry that combines technical combo-building with a distinctly irreverent take on skateboarding spectacle.
