About
Tony Hawk's Project 8 for PlayStation 2 is a 2006 skateboarding game published by Activision and developed for the PS2 and Xbox by Shaba Games. It is the eighth main entry in the Tony Hawk series, built around an aspiring local skater whom Tony Hawk notices while assembling an elite new team called Project 8. The career begins with the player ranked 200th, then asks them to climb toward the coveted eight-person roster by proving themselves across a succession of skating challenges.
Its foundation is the score-chasing style associated with the series. Players link ollies, flip tricks, grabs, grinds, lip tricks, manuals, reverts, and special moves into increasingly valuable combinations, while a balance meter makes extended grinds and manuals riskier. Challenges are graded at Am, Pro, and Sick levels, rewarding more demanding performances and encouraging players to revisit objectives for a stronger result. The familiar on-foot option also lets the skater leave the board to reach parts of an area or set up a line.
Project 8 introduced Nail the Trick, a slow-motion feature activated with the two analog sticks on PlayStation 2. With the camera focused on the board and feet, each stick represents a foot, allowing players to direct flips and rotations more manually before landing cleanly. It is used in dedicated goals as well as regular skating, adding another way to build a score. The game also uses Stokens: impressing nearby pedestrians with tricks earns this currency, which can be spent on in-game items.
The PlayStation 2 edition should not be confused with the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 releases. While those newer-console versions were made around a connected open world, the PS2 version uses separate selectable levels and the established technology of the preceding Tony Hawk games. That makes it a distinct version rather than simply a lower-resolution counterpart. Its career still supplies a broad mix of competitions, score challenges, gap hunting, and tasks set by professional skaters, with the ranking structure providing the through line.
Offline multiplayer is included for local competition, alongside options such as Free Skate and character creation. Project 8 arrived during the series' transition between console generations, and its PS2 release preserves the fast, combo-centered formula on Sony's long-running platform while introducing Nail the Trick to the franchise. For players exploring the later PlayStation 2 Tony Hawk catalog, it stands as a platform-specific take on Project 8's climb from unknown skater to Tony Hawk's chosen eight.
