About
The Hobbit for PlayStation 2 is a single-player third-person action-adventure game released in 2003. Developed for the console by Inevitable Entertainment and published by Sierra Entertainment, it adapts J. R. R. Tolkien's 1937 novel rather than Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films. Players take the role of Bilbo Baggins, the reluctant hobbit enlisted by Gandalf to help Thorin Oakenshield and his company of dwarves reclaim their treasure from the dragon Smaug.
The PS2 adventure begins in the Shire and follows Bilbo across Middle-earth on the road to the Lonely Mountain. Its story visits familiar episodes and places from the book, including the trolls, goblin tunnels beneath the Misty Mountains, Gollum and the Ring, the eagles, Mirkwood, the Wood-elves, Lake-town, Smaug, and the Battle of Five Armies. The game does add material and encounters to turn the novel's journey into a longer interactive adventure, while retaining Bilbo's central role in the quest.
Exploration and platforming form the core of The Hobbit's gameplay. Bilbo runs, jumps, climbs ropes and ladders, catches ledges, crosses vines, and searches each area for routes, collectibles, chests, and people needing help. Chapters are structured around quests: completing the required tasks opens the way forward, while optional objectives provide further reasons to explore. The quest log keeps current assignments and relevant items in view, and chapter summaries record the player's collected Courage Points, opened chests, silver pennies, and completed quests.
Bilbo is not a conventional warrior, but he gradually gains more ways to deal with danger. He starts with a walking-stick and throwing stones, then acquires Sting for close combat. Hidden training scrolls improve these weapons with additional attacks and upgrades. Targeting and defensive movement support encounters with hostile creatures, while the One Ring gives Bilbo a temporary invisibility option for slipping past certain threats. The mix of combat, movement challenges, light stealth, and item-driven objectives suits a story in which resourcefulness matters as much as fighting.
Courage Points provide a distinctive progression system. Colored gems found around levels, earned through quests, or released by defeated enemies fill Bilbo's Courage Meter; filling it grants another health bubble. Silver pennies can be spent at the vendor between chapters on useful supplies such as healing and antidote potions, skeleton keys, larger carrying capacity, and more throwing stones. Chests can hold rewards, though locked ones introduce timed lock-picking puzzles unless Bilbo has a skeleton key available.
The PlayStation 2 version shares its broad design with the GameCube and Xbox releases, all made by Inevitable Entertainment, while the Windows and Game Boy Advance editions were handled by different developers. It is a separate literary adaptation from the era's film-based Lord of the Rings games: its colorful interpretation, standalone Bilbo-focused campaign, and chapter-by-chapter journey offer a game version of Tolkien's earlier Middle-earth tale. For players seeking The Hobbit PS2, it remains a platform-oriented adventure built around navigating Bilbo from a quiet hobbit-hole to the events at the Lonely Mountain.
