About
Operation WinBack for PlayStation 2 is the European and Australian title for Omega Force's third-person action shooter, released by Midas Interactive in Europe during 2001. Known in North America as WinBack: Covert Operations, it is the PlayStation 2 version of the game first introduced on Nintendo 64. The mission places operative Jean-Luc Cougar with SCAT, a covert team sent to retake the GULF complex after the Crying Lions seize control of its satellite-based weapon system. The PS2 release retains the tense infiltration premise while expanding the original game's presentation and side modes.
Its central idea is a deliberate hide-and-shoot system built around cover. Jean-Luc can press himself against corners and walls, lean out to fire, then pull back from incoming gunfire. Rather than running and shooting at the same time, players stop to aim, making position and timing important in firefights. A visible laser sight helps line up shots, while ammunition, enemy placement, and the available cover shape each encounter. The campaign also allows crouching, rolling, close-range attacks, and the use of weapons including handguns, shotguns, submachine guns, silenced firearms, and rocket launchers.
The single-player operation moves through 31 missions spread across four main areas: office grounds, an office building, an abandoned factory, and the GULF control center. Progress is not only about clearing armed opponents. Players search for keys and routes, navigate ambushes and machine-gun positions, and deal with security hazards such as laser traps whose controls must be located and disabled. The story's urgency comes from the captured satellite weapon and the need to reach the control center before its threat is carried out, while encounters with the scattered SCAT members and enemy leaders give the mission its action-thriller frame.
Operation WinBack's PlayStation 2 conversion was more than a simple change of platform. Omega Force revised the visuals with more detailed character and environment work, added lighting, smoke, and shading effects, and included English and Japanese voice options with subtitles. The game also has a substantial set of real-time story scenes. These changes distinguish the PS2 edition from the Nintendo 64 original while preserving the cover-based shooting that defines both versions. In Japan the PS2 game arrived in late 2000; the North American release followed in March 2001, while Midas handled the European release as Operation WinBack.
Outside the campaign, the PS2 version offers a challenge mode and local multiplayer content. Up to four players can compete in versus modes, with matches built around options such as standard combat, team battles, tag-style play, point scoring, and Cube Hunt. The roster grows as content is unlocked and ultimately includes 28 selectable characters, including figures encountered in the story. A separate Bot mode lets one or two players take on computer-controlled opponents across multiplayer maps, offering an alternative when a full group is not available.
As an early-2000s PlayStation 2 action game, Operation WinBack is notable for making cover, peeking, and a laser-guided aiming system the foundation of its combat instead of treating them as occasional additions. Its pacing alternates between careful advances through hostile interiors, environmental obstacles, and direct confrontations, so the game keeps its focus on methodical positioning as well as shooting. Players looking for the European PS2 edition should recognize that Operation WinBack is the same game released elsewhere as WinBack: Covert Operations, not the later sequel WinBack 2: Project Poseidon.
