About
Medal of Honor: European Assault for PlayStation 2 is a World War II first-person shooter developed by EA Los Angeles and published by Electronic Arts in 2005. Part of EA’s long-running Medal of Honor series, it places players in the role of U.S. Army Lieutenant William Holt, an operative working for the Office of Strategic Services. The PS2 release arrived in North America on June 7, 2005, bringing its campaign of European operations to Sony’s console alongside versions for GameCube and Xbox.
Holt’s missions are played from a first-person perspective, with the player moving through occupied territory, aiming and firing period weapons, and using the available battlefield cover and routes to reach objectives. The game employs iron sights and a HUD that distinguishes key goals, while its Adrenaline feature can be earned through combat performance. When active, Adrenaline gives Holt a brief burst of enhanced survivability and unlimited ammunition, creating a temporary change of pace during heavy fighting.
The single-player story begins in 1942 and follows Holt through a sequence of operations inspired by locations and events from the European and North African theaters. Its settings include France, North Africa, the Soviet Union, and Belgium. Missions mix direct assaults with intelligence-gathering tasks: in addition to the central assignment, players can search for documents, pursue secondary targets, and confront named German officers. Completing more of these goals affects a mission’s award and advances the OSS investigation at the center of the campaign.
European Assault also makes allied soldiers an important part of the action. Holt leads small groups in several encounters, fighting alongside British, American, Soviet, and other Allied forces as objectives shift across broad combat spaces. The campaign’s structure leaves room to discover additional tasks while exploring an area rather than presenting every goal at once. The plot was written by filmmaker John Milius and builds its fictional wartime adventure around Holt’s effort to uncover and stop a German weapons threat.
Away from the campaign, the PlayStation 2 version includes offline split-screen multiplayer for one to four local players; it has no online multiplayer. Its competitive options include Deathmatch, Axis versus Allies, and Free for All, with custom-game settings available for the local matches. This gives the PS2 release both a story-driven solo mode and a separate couch multiplayer component built around the game’s World War II weapons and arenas.
The game was released internationally under several names. In Japan, the PlayStation 2 edition is titled Medal of Honor: Europa Kyoushuu, while other territories used localized subtitles. European Assault later appeared again in the PlayStation 2 Medal of Honor Collection with Frontline and Rising Sun. As the eighth entry in the series, it represents the franchise’s mid-2000s console era, combining a cinematic OSS storyline with mission-based first-person combat.
