About
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix for PlayStation 2 is EA UK's 2007 action-adventure adaptation of the fifth Harry Potter film. Published by Electronic Arts, it puts players in Harry's fifth year at Hogwarts, after his warning that Lord Voldemort has returned is dismissed by much of the wizarding world. The PS2 release arrived in North America on June 25, 2007, with European release following that June. Its story draws on the film's central conflict as Hogwarts comes under the control of Dolores Umbridge and Harry, Ron, and Hermione quietly organize students to learn defensive magic.
The game is built around exploring a broad, interconnected version of Hogwarts rather than moving only from one story level to the next. Harry can travel through classrooms, courtyards, common areas, and parts of the grounds while using the Marauder's Map to follow people, locate destinations, and keep track of objectives. Main missions advance the plot, but the castle also contains optional tasks for fellow students and staff. Those errands can involve repairing damaged objects, finding misplaced items, helping students, or making trouble for Umbridge's regime.
Magic is the PS2 version's defining interaction. Harry raises or lowers his wand with the controller, then uses the right analog stick to trace the required gesture for a spell. A circular movement can repair objects with Reparo, directional motions can summon or push objects with Accio and Depulso, and Wingardium Leviosa lets Harry lift and reposition suitable objects. The same approach carries into duels, where spell use, targeting, and defensive timing matter against hostile students and other opponents. Spells are learned as the adventure progresses, giving newly unlocked magic practical uses in both quests and free exploration.
A major part of the campaign is forming Dumbledore's Army. Harry seeks out students around Hogwarts, persuades them to join, and leads meetings in the Room of Requirement. These sequences sit alongside classroom-related activities and story missions that recreate major events from the film. Ron and Hermione frequently accompany Harry or offer direction, while familiar figures including Luna Lovegood, Neville Longbottom, the Weasley twins, and the members of the Order appear throughout the school year. Later episodes also place the player in the roles of Sirius Black and Albus Dumbledore for wizarding duels.
The game rewards thorough exploration through Discovery Points, which are earned by interacting with the environment and completing tasks. Accumulated points improve Harry's available spells and unlock material in the Room of Rewards, including trophies and behind-the-scenes extras. Mini-games based on wizarding pastimes such as Exploding Snap, Gobstones, and wizard chess add further diversions. This emphasis on a lived-in Hogwarts means that moving furniture, fixing a classroom object, or discovering a route through the castle can be as important to a session as a formal combat encounter.
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix follows Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire in EA's main console series and was followed by Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. It was released across several platforms, but the PlayStation 2 edition uses the DualShock controller's analog-stick wand gestures rather than the Wii's motion controls. For players interested in a film-era Harry Potter game focused on navigating Hogwarts, learning spells, assembling Dumbledore's Army, and confronting Umbridge's authority, this PS2 adventure presents the turmoil of the Order of the Phoenix through exploration, puzzle solving, and magical dueling.
