About

FIFA Football 2005 for PlayStation 2 is EA Sports' 2004 football simulation, developed by EA Canada as the twelfth main entry in the FIFA series. Known in North America as FIFA Soccer 2005, it brings club and international football to PS2 with licensed teams, leagues, players, stadium presentation, and English commentary. Matches can be played alone against the computer or with other players, from quick fixtures to longer team-management campaigns.

On the pitch, FIFA Football 2005 PS2 follows the familiar rhythm of building attacks, passing through midfield, finding space, defending possession, and converting chances. The left analogue stick handles a footballer’s movement, while the face buttons cover passes, through balls, crosses, shots, tackles, and clearances. Sprinting changes the pace of an attack, and the game supports different kinds of delivery, including lofted balls and crosses, so timing and the position of teammates matter in the final third.

The defining addition is First Touch control. Instead of receiving every pass in the same way, players can use the right analogue stick to direct the initial touch and attempt skill moves as they bring the ball under control. That gives a pass receiver choices at the moment of contact: take the ball into open grass, try to turn away from a marker, or use a feint to create room. The system rewards practice with direction and timing, particularly when a defender is closing down the ball.

FIFA Football 2005 also builds on the series’ Off the Ball control. When your side has possession, it can be used to move a teammate into a better position or send a runner forward while the ball carrier remains under control. During defending, it helps call a second defender to apply pressure. Together with the first-touch system, this makes support runs, marking, passing lanes, and the battle for space part of the match rather than background animation.

For longer play, the PS2 version includes a 15-season Career mode in which a chosen club is developed over successive campaigns. Create-a-player returns as another way to customize the experience, while the career structure asks players to balance results with progress over multiple seasons. The game also permits a player to take over a simulated match, letting a management-focused season move between broader planning and on-field action.

The 2005 edition arrived in Europe in October 2004, with North American releases following that month. It included the Mexican league in its licensed football selection, broadening the range of clubs available in the series. Regional packaging also varied: the main cover used Patrick Vieira, Fernando Morientes, and Andriy Shevchenko, while North American FIFA Soccer 2005 artwork featured goalkeeper Oswaldo Sánchez in place of Vieira. In Japan, the game was released as FIFA Total Football 2.

As a PlayStation 2 football game, FIFA Football 2005 sits between FIFA 2004 and FIFA 06 and reflects EA Sports’ mid-2000s push for more control over the ball and the players around it. Its season-based career option, licensed football setting, and analogue first-touch mechanics give it a distinct identity within the PS2-era FIFA lineup. Whether used for a single exhibition match or a multi-year club campaign, it centers play on reading the field and making the next touch count.
