About
Driv3r for PlayStation 2 is a 2004 open-world driving action game from Reflections, published by Atari. Styled as DRIV3R, it is the third main entry in the Driver series and returns players to undercover FBI agent John Tanner. The PS2 release arrived in North America in June 2004, putting cinematic police pursuits, criminal investigations, and destructible vehicle chases at the center of a single-player adventure that travels from Miami to Nice and Istanbul.
The main campaign, called Undercover, follows Tanner and partner Tobias Jones as they investigate a sophisticated international car-smuggling operation. Tanner works his way into the orbit of the South Beach cartel while pursuing the people behind a major shipment of stolen high-performance cars. Missions range from escapes, pursuits, tailing assignments, and races to reaching a destination under pressure. The story moves between its three cities as the case broadens, with rival criminals, law-enforcement contacts, and cartel figures shaping the investigation.
Driving remains the core of the PS2 game. Tanner can take control of a broad selection of cars, vans, trucks, buses, motorcycles, and other vehicles, each suited differently to high-speed runs, tight streets, or collisions. A damage model makes reckless impacts matter, while a police attention meter responds to criminal driving and can bring pursuing officers into the action. Players can leave a vehicle and take another one found in the city, though a mission can impose particular failure conditions when a required vehicle is lost or an objective is missed.
Driv3r expands the series beyond the wheel with third-person on-foot movement, swimming, firearms, and drive-by shooting. These additions allow story missions to shift from a chase into an armed encounter or an escape on foot, while health pickups and ammunition add another layer to the objectives. The PlayStation 2 game also uses speedboats in appropriate missions, helping the three city settings support different kinds of pursuit instead of treating every challenge as a simple road race.
Outside the campaign, Take a Ride lets players choose Miami, Nice, or Istanbul and explore without an immediate story objective. The mode is a place to test vehicles, look for hidden content, encounter police reactions, and learn the layout of each city before returning to the next operation. Driving Games provides separate vehicle-focused challenges, giving Driv3r a more direct arcade-style alternative to the narrative missions. These options underline the series identity as a driving game with an open city available between set pieces.
The PS2 version presents the cities as large, stylized recreations rather than exact maps, with varied roads, waterfront areas, dense urban blocks, and routes designed for pursuit. The three locations also support the story's changing tone: Miami establishes the cartel case, Nice moves the investigation into France, and Istanbul becomes the setting for its final pursuit of the smuggling ring. Michael Madsen voices Tanner, while Ving Rhames, Michelle Rodriguez, and Mickey Rourke are among the cast associated with the game's crime-thriller presentation.
Driv3r arrived during a period when open-city action games were becoming a major part of the PlayStation 2 library, but its roots remain in the Driver franchise's emphasis on movie-inspired car chases. Its on-foot features marked a significant change from earlier entries, while Take a Ride and the replay-oriented director feature preserved opportunities to create and revisit dramatic driving moments. Later versions appeared on other platforms, but this PlayStation 2 edition is one of the original 2004 console releases alongside Xbox, built around Tanner's three-city investigation.
