About
Capcom vs. SNK 2: Mark of the Millennium 2001 for PlayStation 2 is Capcom’s 2D crossover fighting game, released in 2001 as the follow-up to Capcom vs. SNK: Millennium Fight 2000. It brings together fighters identified with Capcom series such as Street Fighter, Final Fight and Darkstalkers and SNK series including The King of Fighters, Fatal Fury, Samurai Shodown and Art of Fighting. The PlayStation 2 version adapts the NAOMI arcade game for home play, giving the long-running rivalry between the two fighting-game libraries a single tournament setting.
Matches are contested one fighter at a time, but each player builds a team before the bout. Rather than locking characters into predetermined power values, the Ratio system lets a player distribute four points among a team of one, two or three fighters. A lone Ratio 4 combatant therefore faces an opposing group with more bodies but lower individual allocations, while a balanced three-person lineup spreads the risk across successive rounds. The match ends when one side has defeated every member of the other team, making team order and allocation part of the decision-making as well as character selection.
The game uses Capcom’s six-button layout, with light, medium and heavy punches and kicks. Its central layer of customization is the Groove choice made before a match. Six Grooves draw their broad ideas from different Capcom and SNK fighting systems, changing how the super gauge is filled and spent and which movement or defensive options are available. Running, dashing, air blocking, guard-cancel moves and the handling of super attacks can consequently differ from one Groove to another. The home version also includes a Groove Edit feature, allowing players to assemble a custom ruleset from supported system options.
Capcom vs. SNK 2 expands its crossover cast beyond the first game’s shared Street Fighter and King of Fighters focus. Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li and M. Bison stand alongside Kyo Kusanagi, Terry Bogard, Mai Shiranui and Iori Yagami, with representatives from many other series entering the same 2D battles. The arcade roster contains 44 fighters, while the home releases add four powered-up bonus characters: Evil Ryu, Orochi Iori, Shin Akuma and Ultimate Rugal. Characters retain recognizable special moves and visual identities while being adjusted to operate inside the game’s common six-button framework.
Arcade Mode provides a sequence of team fights leading through the tournament, and its results can lead toward encounters involving Akuma and Rugal. The PlayStation 2 release also supports local two-player competition and offers choices that suit either standard team combat or a direct one-on-one match. Its animated backgrounds are rendered in 3D behind a roster assembled from 2D character artwork, emphasizing the mixture of series and eras represented by the cast. The game’s short story premise centers on another high-stakes event following the earlier Millennium Fight tournament rather than a separate campaign for every character.
This PlayStation 2 release is the original Mark of the Millennium 2001 version, not the later Capcom vs. SNK 2 EO update issued for GameCube and Xbox. EO introduced its own simplified-control option, so it should not be confused with the PS2 edition’s original Groove-based play. Capcom vs. SNK 2 remains a notable entry in the Capcom and SNK crossover line because it combines a large all-star roster with team construction and multiple selectable fighting-rule systems, giving players several ways to approach the same head-to-head matchups.
