About

auto modellista for PlayStation 2 is Capcom's stylised racing game, first released in Japan in August 2002 and arriving in Europe later that year. Developed and published by Capcom, it takes licensed production cars and treats them as vivid, hand-drawn machines rather than photorealistic models. Its distinctive cel-shaded look outlines vehicles, circuits and menus with bold colour and comic-book-like shading, giving this PS2 racer a visual identity quite separate from the more simulation-minded driving games of its era.

The central single-player option is Garage Life. Players begin by choosing from the available cars, enter sets of races, and work through progressively tougher challenges to earn new vehicles, parts and customisation items. Success in the events opens further possibilities in the garage, making advancement about building a useful collection as well as taking the chequered flag. Arcade and time-trial play provide more immediate ways to drive, while local split-screen lets two players race on the same console.

On the track, auto modellista blends accessible circuit racing with a substantial tuning menu. Before a race, drivers can alter equipment such as tyres, brakes, suspension, engine-related upgrades, gearing and weight reduction, then assess the result through the car's acceleration, cornering and braking behaviour. Tyre choice is particularly relevant to conditions, so the garage is not merely decorative: preparation can be part of the approach to a particular event or course.

Capcom also makes the car's appearance a major part of ownership. Paint combinations, body pieces, hoods, spoilers, decals and badges can be combined to create a personalised look, and the game even permits custom licence plates. The roster draws on Japanese manufacturers including Honda, Mazda, Subaru and Toyota, alongside concept and performance cars. Circuits range from purpose-built race settings to recognisable real-world and mountain-road-inspired locations, including Suzuka Circuit and a Mt. Akagi course.

The PlayStation 2 original is important to distinguish from the revised edition released for North America in 2003. That version was reworked as auto modellista U.S.-Tuned and added American cars and oval circuits, adjusted the interface and changed the handling characteristics; Japan subsequently received a U.S.-Tuned edition as well. The December 2002 European release represented here is the earlier version, so its car selection and driving feel should not be assumed to match those later releases or the GameCube and Xbox ports.

auto modellista was also part of Capcom Production Studio 1's early PlayStation 2 push toward network-focused games, alongside projects such as Monster Hunter and Resident Evil Outbreak. Online racing support was available in certain PS2 territories and versions, but it was not a feature of the European PS2 edition. Even without that option, its mix of garage progression, visual car design and unmistakable cel-shaded presentation makes auto modellista a notable early-2000s attempt to give licensed-console racing a more graphic, fashion-conscious character.
