About

All-Star Fighters is a PlayStation 2 fighting game released in Europe in March 2007 by Essential Games. Developed by Digital Zero, it is the European edition of D3Publisher's 2005 Japanese budget title SIMPLE2000 Series Vol. 91: THE ALL STAR Kakutou Matsuri. Rather than introducing a new cast, it brings together characters associated with D3's SIMPLE and SIMPLE2000 games for a deliberately playful crossover tournament. Its PS2-only release frames the contest as an all-star meeting of heroes, heroines, and unusual personalities from the publisher's low-priced Japanese game line.

The action is presented with polygonal characters and arenas, but the fights follow the side-on, one-on-one rhythm of a traditional fighting game. Players work with punches, kicks, throws, special moves, and linked attacks while reading an opponent's position and choosing when to press an advantage. Timing matters beyond ordinary combinations: attacks can be extended through a cancel mechanic, and the low-health Super Impact gives a fighter a high-stakes option for swinging a close bout. Each combatant is built around a different style, so a match can feel very different depending on who takes the stage.

All-Star Fighters draws its roster from across D3's catalogue. Aya, the sword-wielding zombie hunter from The OneeChanbara, appears alongside the Earth Defense Force soldier from THE Chikyuu Boueigun and Riho Futaba, a recurring D3 character. The line-up also includes figures connected with games such as THE Suiri, THE Splatter Action, THE Hajimete no RPG, THE Ninkyo, and the Love Star series. That mixture is the point of the game: characters conceived for action, mystery, role-playing, delinquent, mahjong, and other SIMPLE releases are recast as opponents in the same fighting arena.

The game offers ways to practice techniques, face a survival challenge, and race against the clock, alongside its direct competitive battles. These modes put the focus on learning a chosen character's moves and on completing a run under different conditions rather than on a large story campaign. Short character exchanges help establish the crossover's comic tone, but the central objective remains straightforward: defeat the next challenger and demonstrate which member of this unlikely gathering can prevail.

In Japan, the game was released for PlayStation 2 on December 15, 2005 as the 91st volume in the SIMPLE2000 Series, with D3Publisher handling publishing. The European All-Star Fighters release followed later and uses a different title, while retaining the same basic crossover concept. It is therefore closely tied to the Simple Series' history: players familiar with individual entries can recognise returning characters, while newcomers encounter a compact fighting game whose roster acts as a snapshot of the broad, often eccentric range of D3's PS2-era output.
