About

Metal Slug - Super Vehicle-001 is an unreleased Game Boy Advance port of SNK and Nazca’s 1996 arcade run-and-gun classic. The project should not be confused with the original Neo Geo MVS release or with the separate 2004 game Metal Slug Advance. It survives as a development prototype rather than a finished retail product, making it a notable piece of Metal Slug preservation history and an intriguing look at how the series’ first mission might have been adapted for Nintendo’s handheld.

The underlying game is Metal Slug: Super Vehicle-001, the debut entry in the long-running action series. In the arcade original, Peregrine Falcon soldiers Marco Rossi and Tarma Roving fight General Donald Morden’s Rebel Army across six combat missions. Players run, jump, fire and use close-range knife attacks while rescuing prisoners of war, collecting weapon upgrades and facing oversized military hardware. The famous SV-001 “Metal Slug” tank adds extra firepower and protection when found during a stage.

Nazca developed the original Metal Slug for SNK after many of its staff had worked on Irem projects including In the Hunt and GunForce II. That background shows in the game’s side-scrolling action, densely animated machinery and comic touches: enemy soldiers can be caught eating, resting or panicking before they attack. The 1996 arcade game became known for detailed pixel art, fast action, destructible scenery, POW rescues and a deliberately exaggerated war-cartoon style that helped establish one of SNK’s signature series.

This Game Boy Advance build was part of plans to bring several earlier Metal Slug games to the handheld. The port was announced but cancelled because the limited memory capacity of GBA cartridges could not accommodate the intended conversion. As a result, it was never sold as an official GBA cartridge and has no conventional commercial release date. The June 2020 date associated with this record reflects the public release of preserved prototype material, not a 2020 retail launch of the game.

The surviving build is known to have originated from two developer flash cartridges. One cartridge produced a damaged dump, while the other supplied a working version; preservation archive Hidden Palace released both in June 2020. That provenance is important because it identifies the software as unfinished development material rather than a newly discovered retail edition. The prototype can be explored to study its menus, character-selection elements and attempts to translate the original game’s combat to GBA hardware.

As with many unfinished builds, the prototype contains behavior that does not represent a polished final design. Its stages can be completed by pressing Select, a practical shortcut that underscores its work-in-progress status. The build is best approached as an archival curiosity for Metal Slug fans, game historians and players interested in cancelled handheld conversions. It offers a rare, playable snapshot of a project that could have brought the first Metal Slug adventure to Game Boy Advance but was ultimately left unreleased.

Metal Slug - Super Vehicle-001 on GBA therefore occupies a specific place in the franchise’s history: it is a cancelled port of the original arcade game, preserved from developer hardware, rather than Metal Slug Advance or a replacement for the Neo Geo version. Its existence highlights both the technical compromises involved in adapting animation-heavy arcade games to cartridge-based handhelds and the value of preservation work in documenting games that never reached store shelves.
